    Help with fixing fresh install

    Hello everyone

I am new to the linux community, and am trying to get started. I recently installed the latest Kubuntu Hardy Alpha 6 Release, on an IBM Thinkpad T42, specs available here:
    http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T42

(Its the lower end model, with a 1.7 ghz dothan processor.) Most everything installs fine. However right away, I cannot connect to my wireless network. It gets stuck on "Activation stage: Configuring device". However a wired lan connection works fine. Also, when I open my network settings, it says "The shared library was not found. Library not found."

So when I open Adept Manager, I click fetch updates, then full upgrade, then apply changes. It looks like it updates fine, however it has been stuck on "configuring new version of samba-common" for about an hour now.

Now last time i did this, i just shut down my laptop, and rebooted. It look liked some of the update applied, however due to the premature shutdown while updating, naturally many things were broken. So I whipped my hard drive, and reinstalled. I upgraded again, and its stuck in the same spot.

I am now wondering what I should do? Please keep in mind I'm a n00b. Any help would be appreciated though, thanks! Oh by the by, I would like to stick with KDE 4 if at all possible!

EDIT: Sorry I just realized this is in the wrong place. Mods feel free to delete this.

Re: Help with fixing fresh install

Hi, Well that happends sometimes in a corrupt install.
Try in konsole or pressing ctr+alt+f1 :
    sudo aptitude update
    sudo aptitude upgrade
this maybe can solve the problem or the output suggest you something.

If it doesn't work try Kubuntu 8.04 Beta

Re: Help with fixing fresh install

I have exactly the same problem, except the WiFi card (Intersil Prism 1) is not functioning since the fresh install. It worked well on the live CD which is the reason I loaded it. I have been attemting to get an AT&T aircard to work in Kubuntu 7.10 with no success. I have been working on this for about a week now with no joy. It seems that Kubuntu has the v.1.0.6 driver that Sierra tells me is for the 2.6.18- Kernel and Kubuntu 7.10 uses the 2.6.22 Kernel. I've tried to change drivers with no success following the instructions on the Sierra support page for Linux.

Just in case I've pasted the information on my system below:

I live on a boat, temporarily located in Puerto Rico with limited resources for Internet access so the AT&T aircard is the best solution I was able to find, and it works fine in Windoze, but I much prefer Linux.

      Thanks!
