    Problem with update

hi, after i installed Kubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon and then reboot, the update notifier shows that there are 158 updates, so i choose to update then it starts downloading, when it starts to install the updates it raise an error that may be there was error in fetching some updates, and also the strange thing that it shows there is a newer version of kubuntu with version number "7.10" which is the one i already installed where it asks me if i want to upgrade, so what is this all about??

one note here that i checked the repositories where i have the same selection available in my other ubuntu system but what is happening i dont know ??

    Re: Problem with update

Hi, just to confirm this bug... - which looks like a showstopper at the moment...

I have twice got the same result as you, after trying a clean install (deleting the linux partitions first) of Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 Kubuntu on a Dell C400 with plenty of disk space (90 GB or so free).

Accepting all defaults, just letting the clean install proceed...

After booting into the system, Adept Updater offered me 158 updates. Accepted those, downloaded OK, but partway through the install process, Adept reports it can't continue possibly because a package update would break something.

Decide to reboot and try again... But I can't reboot, because the updater has hosed the boot process: one of the needed very early on (pre-kernel load) is reported as not found.

I'm guessing there's an unfortunate dependency problem with 7.10 Kubuntu's 158 updates on a clean install.

I also saw the offer to upgrade from 7.10 to 7.10, which I guessed wasn't going to help.

I have reported this on Launchpad as Bug #200112. I will report back here if that bug is updated, or pointed to an existing report.

UPDATE: As mentioned elsewhere, the following workaround fixes the problem OK in my case (fresh 7.10 install from CDROM)...

Once adept_updater has crashed, and before rebooting, open a command shell window and execute the following commands:-

    sudo dpkg --configure -a
    sudo apt-get clean
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install

    Then reboot.

I don't know whether the original problem is broken dependency lists or just too many updates at once for Adept Updater, but the system seems OK after that.

    Cheers,

    - Martin

      Re: Problem with update

regarding the reboot issue i had the same, where after Adept Updater raise that error i tried to close it and redo the update where i had an error telling that there is already running Updater with an option to press 'yes' button to resolve this issue but pressing that button doesnt resolve anything, so i decided to reboot where after reboot and exactly right after the 2 seconds countdown i had a command line error telling that "cant find file ... " so i started again with new fresh installation where i had the same again so it seems am having the same scene like u ...

        Re: Problem with update

Hi there! I'm new in this forum and in the Linux system a swell!!

Everything happens for me is a new condition and I feel very frustrated because I can't handle difficulties, since I don't know commands and I've never used a terminal before only DOS when I was a kid...I was a windows user and everything seems so different in this evinronment, even if Kubuntu is surely the most friendly interface to Linux system I have ever seen!

By the way, I am writing here because I recognize the problem reported in this thread, and I think I'm t going crazy about that: I have installed Kubuntu 7.10 for the first time about 2 or 3 weeks ago, and I had all the problems you described here...adept didn't get updated, gave me errors, crashed when I tried to install something that was on the live cd, and also said there was a new version (7.10, that was the one I had just installed!) but didn't get over 66% of download...it stopped and I had to quit download and program.
Someone told me to try sudo apt-getupdate etc on terminal, but even in this way it didn't work.

Then I went to a friend of mine's and he gave me his sources.list file, I overwrote my etc/apt/sources.list, then he changed something I can't remember and it worked!! I could update adept, and I could find almost every program I liked...I was a happy girl!!

Unfortunately, I had to install Kubuntu again (for some reason I will not explain here because it would be too long), this time I am really going crazy, because I have a similar problem with adept (it's not the same, because this time it doesn't crash or give me any error, it just doesn't get updated and it doesn't notify the reason!!) I overwrited the souces.list from my friend's one, like I did the first time, but nothing...I tried to change manually repositories, but again, nothing...I really think this is a problem with repositories, because as I change one of them from the file and I try different combinations, the % of download changes: sometimes it stops at 33%, other times 26%, but the last times I tried didn't move from 0%, and I'm getting really upset because if I try to find on adept something very easy to find, like "amsn", it doesn't find it...let alone my wireless card's drivers!!

So, this time nothing's going in the right way, and I am frustrated because befor re-installing Kubuntu it worked, and now, even doing the same procedures as before, it doesn't!! I feel I can't manage it...

I think someone who has his/her Kubuntu 7.10 adept perfectly working should share publically his/her sources.list, just to make a match and check if there are any differences...

PLEASE, HELP ME, I can't use my first Linux system if I can't update or download programs!!

Thanks to anyone who wants to give me some answers!

            Code:
            sudo apt-get install synaptic

Thank you very much for your answer...I tried to sudo dpkg --configure -a, but it stops at 4% and gives a lot of errors related to some repositories links...

both could be caused by problems with the source list or the mirror repository server. Can you do Alt-F2 "kate /boot/grub/menu.lst" and then copy that file and post it in a reply here? Maybe we will be able to see a problem in it.

Geeeeeeeeeeeeez -- I apologize -- it's early morning and my senile brain slipped a cog. That's your boot menu. What we need to see is the file at /etc/apt/sources.list.

So, try again with Alt-F2 "kate /etc/apt/sources.list" while I go get another cup of coffee.

It's not obvious that there is anything wrong with that source list. Could you open the console and run
                            Code:
                            sudo dpkg --configure -a
and then post the errors that it puts out?

I was re-reading your original post. You said you over-wrote your sources list with your friend's list. Hmmmmmmm. Are you in the same country as your friend? I'm wondering if it would have been better to modify the source list that Kubuntu installed for you -- this may be at the heart of the problem you are having.

Yes, me and my friend are in the same city, too!! Anyway, why should have worked the first time I did this overwriting and now doesn't??

I've tried to write on terminal again sudo dpkg --configure -a command, and differently from before it doesn't say nothing!! this is very strange...when I did it about 1 hour ago it wrote something, but now i press return and there is the prompt kia@kia:~$ (kia is me :P )

What am I supposed to do after giving command sudo dpkg --configure -a?? Maybe I should try to get adept updated?
