    Is my Kubuntu install corrupt?

I just did a fresh download and install of 7.10 x86_64. After making selections in partitioning [manual] and selecting next I got this error:

File system has an incompatible feature enabled.

It only offers to select Ok so I do and then get an error:

The test of the file system with type ext2 in partition # 3 of SCSI 4 (0,0,0)(sda) found uncorrected errors.
If you do not go back to the partitioning menu and correct these errors the partition will be used as is.

This is all strange. I went back but could not find a way to fix errors mentioned. Also the partition is not ext2 it's ext 3. Changing selection to ext 2 did not remove error message. What's up? There isn't much to select in setting up a partition, just mount point [/], size, whether or not to format [yes] and file system type [ext 3]. I am confused what incompatible feature could be enabled? And how can I fix it if it exists? This combined with the fact that Adept Updater crashes the first time you use it [still?] kinda makes me nervous.

It's to obvious to ask, but, do you have a 64-bit CPU?

I've never seen such an error. My first suspicion would fall toward the hard drive. Has it been previously formatted successfully? Jumpered correctly for your setup? What "mode" did you pick in BIOS?

I think I would make a GParted Live CD, remove all partitions, and start again by partitioning and formatting that way first, then using the Kubuntu CD to install. If you get an error again with the Kubuntu CD, then I would suspect the CD itself.

Re: Is my Kubuntu install corrupt?

Let's see. I installed Kubuntu Gutsy on a partition that had previously had Kubuntu Gutsy. But just to test during install I also tried installing it on freespace on another hard drive that was wiped about 6 months ago with QTParted and got the same error message. I also just to test selected other in use partitions and still got the same error. It is OK to do that as long as you don't go past the error message and actually format the in use partition. At any rate I went ahead and installed Gutsy successfully and it is working. I then installed Hardy on another partition [the afore mentioned free space] with the alternate cd. No error message but I had no X or internet. So I burned the Hardy Desktop live cd. When i reinstalled with that I got the same error. Hmmm... I went ahead and installed Hardy and it is now working with xserver and internet.

The HD's have been formatted successfully several times. Note that is HD's plural. Gutsy and Hardy are on different hard drives.

Yes as you can see below my signature the cpu is Athlon AMD64 X2 4800+.

I think the error is referring to something incorrectly selected in what I'm about to format and install but am not sure exactly what is meant. If it is referring to the HD then it is picking up the same error at widely different locations [I tried as many as possible] on 2 seperate HD's. One HD is IDE Western Digital 320GB and the other is SATA Seagate Barracuda 320GB.

Or this could be an error in the installer

I suppose anything is possible. I've been monitoring this forum for about a year and a half, and I honestly don't recall ever seeing that particular error message, so I would say either there is something "new" going on, or you have some unique issue with the combination of BIOS, drives, and installation choices. I dunno -- it's odd. I guess you might get adventuresome and try formatting it as reiserfs (not reiser4!) and see if there are any complaints that way. It should work just as well as ext3.

I didn't try reiserfs but I did try ext2 instead of ext3 and still got error. I'll check some more options at some point.

I would not recommend ext2 or FAT-anything -- they're not reliable. I run XFS, but it's "tricky" and of questionable reliability too. But I ran reiserfs for a year with no problems -- I just got antsy and wanted to try XFS.
