    How to edit kdm?

    Hi

    I downloaded 103 updates yesterday, mainly relating to KDE 4. Something has gone wrong, though.

    After downloading I then logged out of kde3 but kde4 failed to fully load, throwing up a load of (ksyscocoa?) errors and I don't get to a desktop. At that point nothing but the off button works. When I reboot of course the computer now attempts to boot into the defective kde4 and so is now basically unusable. The only thing I can do is use recovery mode. By running startx I get a gnome desktop running as root, but using "logout" simply takes me back to the command line.

    I was thinking that if I could edit the kdm config file I could get it to load kde3 instead. Is that feasible? If so, can anyone tell me how to go about it please?

    Thanks

    Which version of kdm are you running? During the update mine asked if I wanted to use KDE3 or KDE4. If you stayed with KDE3 you can edit '/etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc' using nano.

    [X-:0-Core]
    AutoLoginAgain=false
    AutoLoginDelay=0
    AutoLoginEnable=false
    AutoLoginLocked=false
    AutoLoginUser=michael
    ClientLogFile=.xsession-errors

    this is mine. As you can see I do not have AutoLogin enabled.

        Au Contraire, Ian!

        Whenever possible, you should avoid that button, and follow this guidance instead (your filesystem will thank you by not coming apart unexpectedly):

          Thanks dibl, I'll try to remember. Whilst trying Ctrl+alt+del I also forget Alt+backspace to restart x.

          The basic problem of course is that I use Autologin and so when I selected kde4 which didn't load every time I tried to start it would always try to do kde4 again. Next time I try to test I'll disable autologin first!
