Kubuntu 7.10 trashed itself on install

I have an older Dell Desktop which I was using to run SUSE-10.1. Decided to upgrade to Kubuntu but during the install it froze up. Powered it down and tried to run the Kubuntu install again but all I got was error messages. What now?

Kind of a guess, but this symptom has been previously caused by a bad CD. You need to (a) check the md5sum on your downloaded ISO file, and (b) burn it at only 4X speed on your CD burner. The compression technology that they use on the ISO is very "picky" about the CD burn quality.

The cd is a dvd I got from Amazon. It worked until I tried to install it on the desktop. During it said something about reformatting sda1 and 5. I don't see how it could write on itself as the drive is a cd reader and writer and a dvd reader but it cannot write on a dvd. Also downloading another copy from the net is not an option as I use hughes.net.

Did you install from a Live session or using the text install? The DVD has both IIRC.
