Kubuntu worked just fine for me... until now!

Let me just say that as a relative newbie to Kubuntu and Linux in general I now have no desire to ever go back to a Windows machine for daily use, ever. However I never realized that the honeymoon would be cut short.

I've had 7.10 installed on my desktop since October and besides the odd little Adept bug, I've had no complaints. Then last night as I was booting I got one of those infamous Kernel panics that I've been reading through here. It's funny because I've noticed that this seems to be a common problem when using a Live CD yet it's thanks to a 7.10 Live CD that I'm able to go on here and ask for help! This is what I got more or less.

PCI: Failed to allocate mem resource #6:10000@90000000 for 0000:01:00.0

Pretty normal start to a boot up sequence, right? Then.

Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown - block (0,0)

Yep. It just starts and then it gives me a kernel panic. On an machine that was running fine for several months of all things!

All I ask is if I can still save my desktop and how. I've checked via the Live CD my hard drive and everything is still there. My only partition (hda1) is all Kubuntu 7.10 so I doubt it has anything to do with any partitions that simply do not exist save for the swap partition.

Ask if I need to put up anymore info.

    Thanks in advance.

Wouldn't you know that happened to me the other day! I turned the computer off, opened it up, pushed the pci card back into its place (they always come lose) and booted up without any problems.

Checked all your physical connections while you are at it and give everything a general clean

Yes, that's a normal one -- I get to see it on every boot.

Not so normal, unfortunately. "unable to mount fs" suggests either a broken hard drive or a corrupted filesystem.

I hope you have your data backed up. There are posts here and elsewhere on the topic of "data recovery" but it's an iffy proposition for amateurs, I think.

Well, in my case the hard drive was on the pci card... Let's just hope his setup is somewhat similar

I would humbly suggest that you spool off ALL of the info (to another drive) that you can while you can still see the drive with the Live CD. Your boot sector somehow got toasted and that explains why you can't boot off the drive but you can still see the data using the Live CD.

After you have your data partition backed up, you can try to rewrite the MBR and reinstall GRUB. It MAY be that the boot sector just got corrupted and the drive is actually OK (hope & pray).

          Good Luck.

Take a look at 'testdisk' as well. It can rewrite the boot sector as well as restore lost/corrupted partition tables.

Yep, TestDisk gets my vote, too, along with Mike.

I just messed with it myself:

Data Rescue Links & Comments & Tips
TestDisk -- PhotoRec -- Knoppix (or other Live CDs)

(just tips and links in my how-to; actual testdisk how-to is at their excellent site; but restoring MBR should not be a problem for you; it will (or should) restore the partition table, then you MAY have to deal with restoring bootloader (GRUB), but that's not the end of the world if you have your partition table restored: The MBR is 512 bytes, at the very start of your disk; first 446 bytes is your bootloader code; then comes the important 64-byte partition table; finally 2 bytes for an "endfile" signature = 512 bytes = 1 sector of your disk; please continue to post questions back here on the forum--good luck, I've been there many times for various reasons )
