    Install problems.

    Ok, so from searching the forum a bit, I finally figured out how to keep the screen from going black when I tried to start the Installer from a LiveCD. The problem is its all in text, and I don't know what I'm doing from there. I've looked through the new guy section and tried out different suggestions from people with similar problems, but they start using jargon that I understand about as much as an African *clicking* tribe.

    This is a brand new machine, self-built, and I've never used anything other than Windows and Mac. Can someone help me learn a bit?

    So what happens exactly? You put in the CD, the screen comes up and a load of options hit you. Just pressing enter obviously didn't work and you tried a number of other options...

      I've tried each one of the options, each one takes me to the same exact spot. The Loading Kernel box goes to 100%, then it switches to a text prompt screen and at the bottom it says Kernel is Alive and below that it says "Kernel direct mapping tables 140000000 @ 8000 - e000. Then it goes Black.

      I got lost on the help screen (F1), switching VGA sizes didn't help (F4), and when i used (F6) it brings up the text command of what each option, (install, safe mode, manufacture install, driver update, etc.) actually executes. At the end it had the "quiet splash --". Taking off splash or both makes Install go to a command prompt with a bunch of text that scrolls by quick. There is a time stamp next to each line. The first 6 lines were checking USB ports. Then it did a bunch of stuff that scrolled by too fast. the screen stops, and won't go past, on resembles this:

      * Starting (some option) [ok]
      * Starting (some option) [ok]
      * Starting (some option) [ok]
      * Starting (some option) [ok]
      * Starting (some option) [ok]
      * Starting (some option) [ok]
      * Starting (some option) [ok]
      * Starting (some option) [ok]
      * Starting (some option) [ok]
      * Starting (some option) [ok]
      * Starting (some option) [ok]
      * Running Local Boot Scripts (/etc/rc.local)

        When it goes black, is there a white "_" blinking in the upper left corner of the screen? If yes, then this may help:

          Yes, I read through that thread and from a different post, it didnt help me. I wasn't able to actually install anything in the first place.

          Ha, I have the same graphics card as you.

            Have you tried the alternate CD? It should install okay and from there on you can apply dibl's howto.

              No I have not tried another CD. It took me a while to get this one because a friend had to make it for me. The one I'm on I wouldn't be able to.

                Bummer that, so you don't have broadband... Well, get your mate to burn you the alternate CD from Kubuntu or alternatively state which part of the world you are from and await any kind souls to write you a private message offering to send it to you
