The Kubuntu Boot Screen (Logo + horizontal bar) appear, the software starts loading, it goes upto(somewhere near) the display manager and then it stops - the message displayed is - Not Optimal Mode, Recommended Mode 1280x1024, 60 Hz.

The only way to get out of this is to do a restart.

Have a look at this - it might well help you! http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3091572.0

Alternatively you can forego the dubious experience of usplash and have the boot messages appear on screen as they happen. In this case remove the words "quiet" and "splash" from your Grub kernel line (first during boot and once you are up in /boot/grub/menu.lst) and it will boot as normal.

Removed "quiet" and "splash" from /boot/grub/menu.lst - it has the same behaviour

Edited /etc/usplash.conf to have configuration 1024x768 (instead of earlier 1200x1024) and ran update-initramfs -u ---- but it still has the same behaviour

          Am I missing something?

No, you are not missing anything - my approach was the wrong one

            Let me ponder...
