Kubuntu install doesn't find my partitions?

    Hello all,

After installing vista on my 2 years old laptop, I wanted to install Kubuntu as well.
I have an old ubuntu partition I wanted to install it on.
But, the installer doesn't show me those partitions?!
I can only see the entire /dev/sda in there?
But I know the partitions are there:
    $> sudo fdisk -lu
    omitting empty partition (5)

    Disk /dev/sda: 98.5 GB, 98522403840 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 11978 cylinders, total 192426570 sectors
    Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
    Disk identifier: 0x8d2ffbfb

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sda1 63 160649 80293+ de Dell Utility
    /dev/sda2 * 160650 114398864 57119107+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
    /dev/sda3 114398865 186113024 35857080 f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
    /dev/sda4 124584075 186113024 30764475 83 Linux
    /dev/sda5 114398991 124584074 5092542 82 Linux swap / Solaris

    What am I doing wrong?

    Regards,

You shouldn't have to install Kubuntu over Ubuntu as the core system is the same, just the desktops are different. In adept, you can install the kubuntu-desktop package, plus some of the kde packages. This website gives more detail.

Can GParted Live CD see this disk OK?

Did you try the Manual Partitioning method on the Kubunutu Live CD installer?

I note that Dell has its utility on the first partition.
Your swap file is not in disk order (it comes at the end, but it is not at the end in block sequence -- That is OK, but I'm just noticing a few things here that one doesn't often see).

I wonder if something messed up your partition table in the Master Boot Record -- Who knows!

Try the Manual partitioning method. Problem here is that we do NOT want to mess up anything the Dell needs on your disk to run your Windows or something else.

        Like .... Vista, maybe?

If Vista was recently installed, that MBR probably doesn't know about anything else on the drive.

I had some similiar problems on my machine when trying to install not Vista but several OS on the same disk(s). MBR is limited in size and now I am sure that when it is full it makes complication if you are not installing already onece installed OS. This is my opinion. In any case use Hirens Boot cd with utilities and erase it and start all over again till you make what you want.

That's OK -- sdb3 is the extended partition.

Also, you can have many OSs on one disk. Something like 15 in Linux.
