After "Start/Install from LiveCD," screen goes and stays black for 40+ mins.

After I select "Start/Install from LiveCD" it goes into a black screen and remains at that state for 40+ minutes. The CD drive light stops flickering about 10 minutes in. I'm aware that it is supposed to go black for a short period of time, but this seems like an issue. I've verified the iso I downloaded and used the check for the CD on the boot. Both come back fine. Any ideas?

    Thanks =)

    System Specs:
Chip: AMD Athlon 64 FX-60 Dual Core
    Motherboard: ASUS A8N32-SLI-Deluxe
    RAM: 4gb (4x1024 sticks) PC3200 DDR SDRAM
Storage: ATA 500gb Internal Harddrive (seperate drive from my Windows drive)
    Video: Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS
    Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 226BW(Digital)

EDIT: I'm attempting to install the AMD 64 bit version of Kubuntu.

I'm not 100% sure I understand how you did check the CD? The standard procedure seems to be to test at boot with the CD. I can't verify this, but there seems to be someone who has experienced ok checksum, but bad burn nevertheless?

A couple of other things - first, run the memtest on the install CD. It may be a very remote chance, but I have had one PC who misbehaved in more or less the way you describe - where the extensive test done from the Kubuntu CD did find a bad module.

Did you try the alternative CD/DVD? The install procedure there is a little more complicated, but you get to know where the problem arises.

Sorry I can't be more helpful; that's my level of Kubuntunowledge ;-)

The 8800GTS is like a donkey -- it must be whipped into submission.

Your problem is entirely in the video domain -- it is NOT related to 64-bit vs. 32-bit.

I don't know if the Live CD can be made to work with it -- it would undoubtedly require that you press the F6 "Options" and choose a VGA mode, but it sounds like you're not even getting that far.

If you're pretty sure you want to install Kubuntu (which will work great, BTW), then I recommend you download and burn an Alternate Install 64-bit CD, and use that. If I remember correctly, it worked straight away on my rig -- at least the Hardy Heron one did.

Heck, why not go for Hardy Heron, Alpha 4, and then KDE4 on that?

I keep hearing that about the 8800, so I guess I'll try the alternate CD install. When I burned the 32 bit version, it installed fine (other than switching up my hds thus not recognizing the partition it just installed onto). I'd prefer the 64 bit version, obviously.

I've never done an alternate CD install... is there a guide for it somewhere (that I've yet to find)? [Note: I haven't finished downloading it yet]
