Unable to transfer files from another hard drive !!

My friend has kubuntu installed in his pc. He wants to transfer his files to a another hard disk(which is not connected .and in that xp is installed). When he connects another hard drive, all the drives are getting detected. But he is unable to open drives of external hardisk.They are mounted, but he is unable to open those drives. what to do

I'd say we need to see the command line output of ls -l while he is in the external hard drive. If the partitions are mounted it is probably a simple question of rights...
