    log in lock up

I just installed Kubuntu 7.10 for the first time.. I haven't used linux probably since red hat a few years ago. Well I've gotten in installed, finished with the Live CD. When I rebooted, pick the first option in GRUB, it will prompt me for my username and password. I type em in and everything is working, it loads up, or starts to. It pulls up the screen and my keyboard and mouse stop, so does everything else.

Any clue what would cause it to seem to lock up, it may be locking up but I really can't tell.

I'm not sure if this solution applies to your problem, but you might want to take alook at this:http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3088251.0
    I break it, therefore I learn it.<br />

Can you use liveCD without lockups ?

When your session locks/freezes, can you start session vith virtual console /1/ . Press Ctrl + Alt + F1 (or F2...6). If you can, linux is keeping logs almost everything. Maybe logs tell what is wrong:

      /1/ Virtual console
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_console
a virtual console (VC, sometimes virtual terminal, VT) is a conceptual combination of the keyboard and the display for a user interface. The concrete combination is the system console of the computer, where the user can switch between the virtual consoles to access multiple unrelated user interfaces. Usually in Linux, the first six virtual consoles provide a text terminal with a login prompt to a unix shell. The graphical X Window System starts in the seventh virtual console.

Hmmmmmmmm -- that's the second post of this kind of problem in the past 24 hours. That system wouldn't happen to have an Nvidia 8000-series graphics card, would it?

actually at the advice of a buddy, I yanked the sound card, as it was giving me an error during initial start up from Live CD, and it works perfectly, of course minus the fact that i now have no sound card lol. So I guess it's off to find the right sound drivers now
