Heeeeelp- i messed up my Kubuntu

I have messed up my Kubuntu 7.10 by trying to install the updates for the new alpha 8.* well I know im a newbie but i thought i could do it! but now lots of packages say they are broken and i cant do much with it and lots of things wont work .
how can i fix my mess or am i stuffed and have to start all over again, took 2 months to get it this far

If you open the Konsole and enter

uname -a

what is the reported system?
