YES, formatting a partition will result in a new UUID.

Re: Error 11: Unrecognized device string : Kubuntu 8.04 won't boot up

      Mike

as you suggested in your post# 25, I've created this entry in Fedora's Menu.lst:

      title Kubuntu 8.04 Configfile boot
      configfile (hd0,5)/boot/grub/menu.lst

      and yes,

So when I turn on the PC, I get Fedora's boot menu, I select Kubuntu Configfile boot, I get a second boot menu from Kubuntu, I select Kubuntu (again) and it boots into Kubuntu with no problems.

      Thats right. Thanks to YOU.

I was wondering as is there a way to correct this original Kubuntu entry in Fedora's Menu.lst so that I can repeat that (after correction; and after knowing what was wrong in it) in future installations:

::::::: Can we correct this or what is wrong in here that don't let Kubuntu boot up ::::::::

title Ubuntu hardy (development branch), kernel
      2.6.24-3-generic
      root (hd0,5)
      kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-3-generic
      root=UUID=bb9376fc-7f60-4330-aa2f-f1e43d21a532 ro
      quiet splash
      initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-3-generic
      quiet

      ::::::::::::::::::

      Thanks again.

Re: Error 11: Unrecognized device string : Kubuntu 8.04 won't boot up

Fedora doesn't like the kernel line, and the only thing I can see is the UUID reference.
No, I would not try to correct it.
Leave it. Comment-it-out using #'s in front of each line.
No question, Fedora did not play well with Kubuntu here.
This should be standard stuff, even child's play, but not so today, huh?
Somehow, Fedora's “setup” (whatever, the installer, its GRUB—which may be a patched GRUB for Fedora, I don't know, speaking from ignorance now). Fedora's setup did not like Kubuntu's kernel line, and quite probably did not like Kubuntu's device reference using the UUID.

There are many ways to boot OSs, so don't try to be a purist! Practice doesn't always follow theory. We need to know more about Fedora to go further with conclusions. Did you try installing Fedora AFTER changing ALL UUIDs in Kubuntu to sda6's? That's all I can think of to try and test Fedora.

Re: Error 11: Unrecognized device string : Kubuntu 8.04 won't boot up

Ok now I know re-format is the cause of changed UUIDs

but even if I didn't re-format during Debian & Fedora installations, still they (sda7 & sda8) would have been identical = duplicates, right?

So even in that scenario, Kubuntu still have some unresolved UUIDs or some similar error problem or not? (this i like to learn for my knowledge and future use)

          Many thanks Mike AND dibl.

Re: Error 11: Unrecognized device string : Kubuntu 8.04 won't boot up

You can't draw any conclusions here. There was a bad malfunction, that's all. But no, the UUIDs should not be duplicates here.

Unrelated -- I've got to try to log out for awhile. The kubuntu forum has gotten very, extremely slow--it takes forever to refresh or to post, and I get errors (No Service, "Done" with blank white page, etc.).
I'll return later to read anything you post
IF I can even post this one!

Ok I will NOT try to edit Fedora's original GRUB entry any more, I'll just comment (#) it out.

Also later today I'll re-install Fedora 8 and will post the results here, afterwards.

Many, many thanks Mike, without your detailed help, I would have gone with Debian / OpenSUSE, skipping Kubunu.

And yes, I did get to learn alott about Linux too.

              Thanks again.

Yes. It happens now and again. Frustrating when it occurs. But, as of this posting, it seems to have been 'resolved.'

Just tried again and got back in (I was never logged out according to the front page...?)

Only if you insist on more experiments...
You did try re-typing the Kubuntu boot entry in Fedora's menu.lst.
The other thing to try is copy the K8.04 boot stanza from Kubuntu's menu.lst on sda6 and paste it into Fedora's menu.lst, then label it so you recognize it (e.g., Kubuntu 8.04 from Kubuntu sda6 menu.lst).

                  Other/related:

Read Wikipedia on UUIDs and how they are randomly generated. Tells why they don't duplicate.
                  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UUID

I did read of a hacker who rigged up a situation where the same UUID was assigned to two distinct devices, but I wouldn't hold my breath to see that happen in normal environments.

Play with your OSs for awhile.
Then you might wish to read the how-to's, including herman's @

(e.g., see the GRUB page, Filesystems and mounting, and others)
And check out the How-To's here at Kubuntu forums , the pinned and those under Documentation > How-To's.

                    edit—correction and addition to above:

You can have both Kubuntu and Ubuntu Desktops to choose from (when you log in). Another experiment. But caution that you don't trash-out your working Kubuntu (as I did once).

Many thanks for ALL your help and info.

I've just started from scratch (after COMPLETE format) and Vista Ultimate is almost done. Solaris Express is next

Will post the results later on.

                      Thanks again.

you only needed to re-install Fedora, as you know, for the test, but I guess you wanted to run it all again from scratch?; you must be getting good at it...

Re: Error 11: Unrecognized device string : Kubuntu 8.04 won't boot up

This time I'm planning to partition the hard drive little differently than all previous installations.

After Solaris is done, I'll create only two, Swap (sda5) and Kubuntu (sda6), partitions in extended partition.

Rest I'll leave as unallocated space, so Kubuntu won't get any UUID for that unallocated space in first place, ( during all my previous installations I created all sda5, sda6, sda7 and sda8, partitions together after Solaris installations; using partition manager running in Vista), just like Kubuntu did not create any UUID for Solaris Express, as Solaris partition is not recognized by any Linux OSes.

And after Kubuntu installation, I'll create rest Ext3 partitions using Vista and then I'll install OpenSUSE, Debian and Fedora.

                          Thanks again.

You'd be better advised to create three partitions - root, /home, and swap. Having a separate partition for /home means you can reinstall the OS (if required) without risking all your personal settings and saved files.

Multi Boot: Error 11: Unrecognized device string : Kubuntu 8.04 won't boot up

                              hi Mike

Many thanks for ALL your help.

I've just completed another round of multi boot installation of Kubuntu 8.04 with Vista Ultimate, Solaris Express 09/07, OpenSUSE 11.0, Debian 4.0 and Fedora 8, this time successfully.

I started from the scratch (after complete format) and even this time, the simple entry for Kubuntu into Fedora 8's GRUB Menu.lst was giving me the same "Error 11: Unrecognized device string".

So I just added a boot stanza and ran that GRUB setup for Kubuntu in Fedora's Menu.lst as described in your reply# 25.

Now all six OSes boots up just fine. ( what to do with all these OSes is another question )

I really appreciate all your help, I learned alott from it.

                              Thanks again.
