A research subject for future users ending up here with similar problems:
I saw in another forum post that Fedora 8 uses LVM. Long story there. And there * may * be an option during install to not use LVM (?). But it does use GRUB 0.97. Whatever. If true about LVM, that explains why configfile worked but chainloader didn't. That's all for me on this subject because (1) that's all I know, and (2) there's more interesting things to learn about right now . But maybe this tip will help some one else who happens to stumbleupon it here.
