I have a dual boot, Kubuntu 7.10/Win XP on a 60 GB Laptop.
I want to upgrade to a 160 Gb. What is the best way to do this. I don't want to reinstall.
In total Noob terms?

OK, I'll kick off...

First you'll need the hardware to transfer data from one disk to the other. What is your set-up/plan as far as that goes?

I'm thinking of the same thing, but have found out that my laptop (Toshiba Satellite L25-S119) is ATA-6 which limits size to 120GB. I suppose there are disk utilities that could get around this...haven't looked too hard...still researching it though.

Tiger Direct has cabling setups for most all types of hard drives..you may want to take a look there.

As far as backup software...I have used Acronis True Image-Home for about 2 years and has always bailed me out of my own messes. It will backup multiple partitions, which I just did around the holidays...WinXP and openSUSE on a 60gb...took about 1.5 hours and 2 DVD 4.7 disks.

I don't know what kind of laptop you have but when I upgraded my laptop I took it to my corner computer store and they had two adapters so I could hook may old and new HD's to a desktop machine and just copy the partition over from old to new with the gparted live cd.

Maybe your corner computer shop has an adapter that will let you hook up your newHD to a usb port?

Thanks for the replies. I was desperate, so I just did a reinstall.
I am going to play with partimage, because when I get it the way I want it, I can take an image right?

Right - alternatively, unless you actually tinkered a lot with new software, you can just pull your old /home directory over. KDE, emails, all data will be just like it was on the old system (probably your easiest option).

You mean if I just copy over the "Home" directory, all my apps will show up on my menus and everything will run?
That is unbelievably simplistic! In windows, I had to spend hours reinstalling.

No, that is not quite what was meant

Your /home/youruser folder contains all of the configurations and personal stuff like email, addresses, calenders, and config files for konqueror, Kontakt, etc.

You will still have to install all the apps that you installed personaly last time.
But for the future you might want to look at this:

apps no, menus yes

Apps are not stored in the home partition but your personal settings for kde and settings for apps are stored here. If your home partition contains settings for apps which are not part of your new system (say firefox add ons) these settings will apply as soon as you have installed the app.
