    Possibly this "Fatal error" was caused by hda4 being an extended partition which contains hda5, hda6, & hda7...?


    No, that shouldn't be a problem at all. Note that (hd0,4) = hda5, so that should be perfect. . You can put GRUB anywhere (except in partition 4, the Extended). Occasionally, you see that GRUB error, but not very often; but it does happen--something just got corrupted or whatever. You are becoming an expert on installs! (I've done my fair share, too )
