Did anyone else receive and update that removed KDE4? Last night it showed I had an Adept showed I had updates which updated KDE4 programs but removed KDE4-core. Just wondering if anyone else experienced this.

I had the same thing. However, the new update (~1h ago) fixes it (you still have to manually select kde4-core to install).

Konqueror 4 on the other hand is doing the usual crashing all the time, so back to my trusty Firefox!Kopete 4 crashes when I try to set up my MSN account, no change there then!

Yeah, Konq crashes and neither Kopete 4 nor old Kopete will run from my KDE 4 desktop. Adept has to be "handled" through Alt-F2 to launch it. I must say the KDE 4 graphics are gorgeous -- too bad half the apps don't seem to want to launch, on my rig anyway.

I think I'll just let it sit there while I revert to booting into KDE 3.5. Maybe updates will give it better functionality over the coming weeks. Maybe I'll get inspired to burn a new CD and do a clean installation of Kubuntu KDE 4 and set it all up without the KDE 3.5 stuff hanging around. I dunno -- I can't use what I've got very well, as it is now.

there's a guide somewhere about setting up KDE4 using the LiveCD which is NOT an install CD.

To be honest, I might be having the success I am with KDE4 because I killed my HDD which forced me to do a fresh install. I basically installed Kubuntu, added the new repo, updated rebooted, installed KDE4, rebooted, installed my fav apps and have been enjoying a stable desktop ever since.

Oh I was motivated.... lol. I'm just glad I had most everything backed up. New HDD seems fine... it's too big for my main drive but it's fine.

I see there's an Alpha 4 release of Hardy Heron scheduled at the end of this month, and that they've incorporated KDE 4 into HH as of Alpha 3. I'm thinking maybe I'll consolidate the breakage into a single broken new system consisting of HH A4 running KDE 4. That should keep me off the streets for awhile!

I was considering the same thing.. but to be honest Gutsy in alpha stage was pretty harsh.. I'm liking having a working system right now. (lol he says while posting from the days old desktop)

Yep it sure was ... that's why I'm happy to wait 2 more weeks to Alpha 4 -- hopefully the worst of the non-functional stuff will be working by then. (crossing fingers here ...)

With luck, it will be solid enough that I can upgrade it from Alpha 4 to the released version in April.

There is almost no software available for KDE4. So I don't have anything to take advantage of its extra features.

There is quite a lot of kde4 software in the repos (at least in the hardy repos), they're just not installed by default with kde4-core (kde4-core just installs the core packages)

Thanks. I'm running Gutsy. I haven't seen anything, but I will see if there were any more KDE4 packages added with this recent update.

Call me crazy, but I like KBFX, and my problems with Kickoff are mostly "little" things. It is an interesting concept. Since I haven't used Suse since version 9.1, It is also new to me.

I still hate Kickoff, and think it was a bad choice for KDE4, but I'm more forgiving now that I realize it was a Beta release. I understand why, but I don't like what they did.

Now to track down Okular. [sp?]

I'm waiting for kubuntu hardy with kde4 installation cd

I realized that this is a bit odd reasoning and did give kubuntu7.10 kde4 packages a try - certainly not usable desktop for me, annoyingly slow kwin desktop effects performance compared to compiz+kde3, horrible logout/login sounds + they are too long; on the bright side I like oxygen icons and style as expected

I tend to like them, but that is subjective. Besides you can change them to whatever you like whenever you like

Yes Fintan I agree, I prefer the new sounds to the old, I love the Bmmppphhh sound as a window closes, the log out and log in sounds also.

My wife likes those "Bmmpphhh" sounds too. I'm indifferent. It sort of makes the desktop feel more interactive.. so that's a good thing I guess.

Compiz works great on KDE4. I want to see what Plasma has to offer though. Unfortunately, Kwin4 is painfully slow. I've also faced the Nvidia black screen glitch.
