All in all it looks really good and it's incredibly fast... stability might be an issue as I go but so far it hasn't been. At least not for me.

Same here. No issues of any real importance.

      The Menu DOES suck...
agreed. You can change that by opening up the widgets panel and choosing k-menu (traditional)

      Edit:
Try running a video on one virtual screen2 and go back to lets say FF for browsing or skype for phone calls on V-screen 1. Then switch back and forth. That is fun

I still haven't taken the plunge. Still using the LiveCD. Is it "safe" to install all that the ppa wants to install - KDE 3.5.8 and KDE4? I really like the feel of KDE4, but don't want to screw with a stable system, unless the two Desktops can coincide.

The two systems can co-exist and there does not seem to be any harm in installing the 3.5.8 programs from the ppa repository.

I followed the instructions from kubuntu. I was nervous, but so far so good. I will report back with any problems.

Here is my first impression (outside of LiveCD) after taken the plunge to install.

After installing KDE4 and trying to mess with it a bit I believe that it still needs quite a bit of work. After installing the desktop looks similar to what it would if my resolution was 800x600. I checked to make sure the resolution was set to 1280x1024 and it was, it just seems KDE4 makes everything huge. Also being unable the adjust the panel is quite annoying. I actually feel the best idea for KDE4 would be to take a page out of MS's book a have a KDE3 theme similar to the "Classic" settings XP has.

Re: Who's gonna be an early KDE4 adopter?

Well I class myself as an 'ordinary user' and I love it! I now have it installed on Kubuntu (HH) and also an OpenSuse install on my ext drive. Funnily enough (as I read somewhere that the guys who develop for KDE also are part of the OpenSuse team) I have had more problems with the OpSu install of KDE4 than the Kubuntu install. For example, couldn't get the Desktop Effects to work, but I knew that they worked with my graphics card as they were working okay in Kubuntu, so after trawling around, found out I needed to enable composite etc so now everything effectwise is working okay.
Konqueror 4 on the other hand is doing the usual crashing all the time, so back to my trusty Firefox!Kopete 4 crashes when I try to set up my MSN account, no change there then!
What I am doing is reporting any crashes, strange happenings, things dissappearing etc straight to the KDE guys and at last I feel useful and as if I am contributing.
I can't program, takes me all my time to use the terminal never mind anything else, but hey! I am learning all the time!

I think that KDE is going to be the desktop that will finally tip 'ordinary users' over from you know where to Linux, yes it has a lot of eye candy, but that is what users seem to want these days!

I'm a few days in now, and I've done all the normal user stuff. Other than the menu and the lack of ability to config the panel (including a lack of a quick launch panel) I love it.

I will be doing some audio work this week and that should really tell the story.

Well you have a systray in your widgets. Just drag and drop to the panel.

As for putting apps on your panel, you can right click on any app.
in the kmenu (kde4 style, not traditional) and choose "add to panel".

It is not a quickluanch gutsy kde3.5 style but....these are early days

                        YAHOO!!!

Cool I thought "systray" was going to just duplicate what was already there. Very cool! I'll give this a try at lunch.

I really don't know what everyone is complaining about over at OSNews.. KDE4 has been very good to me so far.

Did anyone else receive and update that removed KDE4? Last night it showed I had an Adept showed I had updates which updated KDE4 programs but removed KDE4-core. Just wondering if anyone else experienced this.

I had an update this morning, I didn't have time to check what it was changing. But I see that I still have KDE4-Core installed now.

Yeah, Konq crashes and neither Kopete 4 nor old Kopete will run from my KDE 4 desktop. Adept has to be "handled" through Alt-F2 to launch it. I must say the KDE 4 graphics are gorgeous -- too bad half the apps don't seem to want to launch, on my rig anyway.

I think I'll just let it sit there while I revert to booting into KDE 3.5. Maybe updates will give it better functionality over the coming weeks. Maybe I'll get inspired to burn a new CD and do a clean installation of Kubuntu KDE 4 and set it all up without the KDE 3.5 stuff hanging around. I dunno -- I can't use what I've got very well, as it is now.

                                But it's pretty .....
