    A different installation problem

My wife got a new laptop for christmas. I got her old one. It is an HP dv6000. I put a new 120GB hard drive in it so I can save the original as a backup. I have been trying to install Kubuntu with the AMD64 alternate install cd. I get to the point where it says Select and install software. It gets to about 5% and crashes. It is setting up xserver at the time of the crash. I have checked the md5 on the download...pass, ran the memory check...pass, ran the disk verification...pass. I have read that there are problems with the nVidia video card that is in there, but it appears that you can install Kubuntu then fix the video drivers afterward (along with some other drivers). This problem is very repeatable, it crashes in the same place every time. What am I missing?

    Thanks,
    Eric

You don't want to hear this ......

Sometimes the "Verify CD" tells lies. :P

Most of these "it freezes at xx%" reports turn out to be a problem with the CD, or the CD burn. Sacrifice one more blank CD to this venture, and burn it at 4X speed, and try that one. I'll cross my fingers.

I followed your suggestion and burned another disk. My wifes new machine won't slow down to anything below 10x. The new cd crashes in the same spot. I'm going to try downloading a new copy of the iso on my now funcitoning kubuntu desktop and give that a go. I'm crossing my fingers at this one too. I'm glad I sheeled out for the fiber line so I can download iso images pretty quickly.

You say that the PC has an nVidia video card. When you are on the initial CD screen menu, look for the option to boot using Safe Graphics or an option to choose the graphics mode (dibl: help me here, as you have nVidia experience) for use during installation. What you want to do, most probably, is to force the installer to use a safe, known to work, VESA graphics controller. Once installed, and you have a bootable OS and are at the desktop, you can then work on getting the nVidia graphics card/chip set properly configured.

Thanks Snowhog, I'll see what I can find. I'll also use the new iso that I downloaded.

            Re: A different installation problem

FIXED! I burned the iso image from my Kubuntu machine and it worked no problem. Considering my total distrust of all things microsoft, I'm going to blame Vista for all my troubles with the install. While I'm on a rant I downloaded BitTorrent to my wifes vista machine to download the iso files and it installed btdna. By my definition this is a virus and it took me 4 hours+ to remove. Thanks dibl and Snowhog for your help!

It's possible that you didn't install Vista correctly, for a flawless install of it, watch this video and try it his way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVbf9tOGwno
