SOLVED: bad config with error msg: "Monitor & Display could not be loaded"

I upgraded to 7.10, Also installed apt-doc and OpenSSH, don't remember what else. Is there an install log that shows what I have installed and upgraded?

More important, I need to know where to find old or orphaned modules. I don't even know where to start. Help?

    Here is the error message:

The module Monitor & Display could not be loaded.

    The diagnostics:

    Possible reasons:

    - An error occurred during your last KDE upgrade leaving an orphaned control module
    - You have a old third party modules lying around.

Re: orphan modules prevent display module from running

Open Adept Manager and search for kde-guidance. In your case, the likelyhood is that it is not installed.
    kde-guidance

collection of KDE system administration tools for GNU/Linux

Guidance currently consists of four programs designed to help you look after your system: o userconfig - User and Group administration o serviceconfig - Service/daemon administration o mountconfig - Disk and filesystem administration o displayconfig - [u]Screen and display configuration o wineconfig - Wine configuration

These tools are available in KDE Control Center, System Settings or can be run as standalone applications.

Thanks. I checked adept and kde-guidance is installed. Did displayconfig --help-all at command prompt but don't see where to go from there.

Also, when I switched from a different distro to kubuntu, I lost track of where the KDE Control Center is, too. feel kind of dumb about that one . . . adept says it's installed but I don't know how to get to it.

Okay. Let's try the 'other door' approach.

        Press Alt+F2 and type:
        Code:
        kcontrol
Click on Peripherals and Monitor & Display and see if you can't get in this way. Let me know if this works.

Got into Control Center OK, and peripherals. When I click on Mouse, I get a mouse configuration dialog, but when I click on Monitor & Display, it fails silently. (Just get the Control Center splash screen in the right-hand frame.)

Update: After trying a third time, I got into Monitory & Display, but get same error message (about possible orphans and old third party modules).

Re: orphan modules prevent display module from running

Open a console and type (or copy/paste the command below):
              Code:
              ls -l /etc/X11/xorg.*
              Copy/paste the listing. Then type:
              Code:
              cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
              Copy/paste the output for review.

Don't attempt any more modifications to xorg.conf. I need you to post the contents of the xorg.conf.1 and xorg.conf.3 files. In the console, type:
                  Code:
                  cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.1
                  and then
                  Code:
                  cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.3

Re: orphan modules prevent display module from running

Okay. This is what you are going to do.

                      Open a console and type:
                      Code:
                      sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf_BAD
This renames the current xorg.conf to xorg.conf_BAD. Then type:
                      Code:
                      sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.1 /etc/X11/xorg.conf.1_GOOD
This makes a copy of the file xorg.conf.1 and names it xorg.conf.1_GOOD. Then type:
                      Code:
                      sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.1 /etc/X11/xorg.conf
This creates a copy of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.1_GOOD and calls it xorg.conf.

This preserves the two 'original' xorg.conf files "just in case." The xorg.conf we create in this process is from the file that was present before you upgraded. The likely problem that I saw in your current xorg.conf file is the bold line in this section:

                      Section "ServerLayout"
                      Identifier "Default Layout"
                      screen 0 "Default Screen" 0 0
                      Inputdevice "Generic Keyboard"
                      Inputdevice "Configured Mouse"

                      # Uncomment if you have a wacom tablet
                      # InputDevice "stylus" "SendCoreEvents"
                      # InputDevice "cursor" "SendCoreEvents"
                      # InputDevice "eraser" "SendCoreEvents"
                      EndSection

After you have performed these steps, you can restart X by pressing Ctrl+Alt+BkSp and then see if you can't get into Monitor & Display

                        Works just like uptown! Thanks.

BTW, I did no manual modifications of the config file; that was all done by the installation. I just did a diff--as you must have done--and yes it apparently went all "generic" on me.

Well, it's sure nice to get back to 1400x1050. 640x480 is exhausting!

Re: orphan modules prevent display module from running

Actually, part installation, part post-installation. Possibly when I upgraded something. Because the monitor was OK for a while. Then today an inch off the left side was missing so I tried to start up the Display Module and the system took me all the way back to 640x480.

Cool! You hadn't said anything about the reduced resolution, but I saw that when I compared the xorg.conf* files. Isn't it nice to have your display back the way it was? Also, can you confirm that you are now able to get into Monitor & Display?

So, you may wonder, how did I come to the conclusion that your problem was a result of a bad xorg.conf file? Read this post which lead me to this conclussion.

There is a wealth of information in this Forum. You will be well served to utilize the search feature - I do - A LOT! Also, Google is you friend. Don't forget about him either.

Yes, everything is up and running. And yes, oh so sweet!

I see what you mean by searching. That post was right on target. Well, back in the saddle. Windoze is OK if you don't mind gargantuan complexity. But if you just want the parts to play well together, and work well and simply, Linux is home.
