Installer can't locate my HDD

Hey guys.

I'm posting off of my install disk because the Kubuntu installer can't locate my drive, I decided that my old 20 gig drive was too small, so I installed to a 120 gig drive. After switching drives, and powering on my computer, POST shows the drive, as does XP's DIsk Manager, but the installer only recognizes my XP drive. After multiple tests, and reboots into the install disk, I can't figure out the problem.

My Windows drive is a single SATA drive, and the drive I want to install on is a single master PATA drive.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Suggestion #1: Make a GParted Live CD, and use that to partition and format the new drive (ext3 or reiserfs format for Linux):

Make 3 partitions on the new drive, like this:

6GB -- for the future "/"
0.5GB -- for the future "swap"
the rest of it -- for the future "/home"\

Suggestion #2: Set the boot flag on the big drive, and turn it off on the old drive.

Suggestion #3: Make a Kubuntu Alternate Install CD, and use that to install Kubuntu on the new drive.

I did use my alternate disc initially (detected both drives) dibl, but I quickly reverted back to my desktop disc because the alternate installer complained that it couldn't read my NTFS partition after formating my 120 gig, so I'm back again with the desktop disk. I also had your suggested partition layout too (root/swap/home).

Any other ideas?

I got it,

After fiddling around, I reset my overclocked system to it's original speeds, and I got Kubuntu to successfully install.

Anyone know why OC'ing would cause a disk not to be discovered, and can I restore my OC settings, or will Kubuntu not boot again?

Hi Janthes,

With overclocking that can sometimes introduce adverse affects to the system. Never heard of that causing Linux not to detect a harddrive though. With Linux though you won't need to overclock as it is less of a resource hog then windows and runs real well even on older hardware with plenty of speed. My machine is an old XP 1600 with a gig of ram and a Nvidia Geforce 6800 and WD 80 gig hard drive. This machine took forever to boot windows XP. With Kubuntu it boots Linux faster then a dual core can boot XP.
