    Cannot boot KUBUNTU

    Hi
I am dual booting SABAYON on HDA (master) and KUBUNTU on HDB(slave) all was working fine untill I upgraded KDE by accident.
Now when I try to boot KUBUNTU from Grub I get the following message:-
    Booting Kubuntu
    root (hd1,0)
filesystem type is exft2fs, partition type 0x83
    kernel /vmlinuz root= /dev/hdb1
    [linux-bimage, setup=0x1c00, size=0x1a7c08]
    initrd/initrd.img
    error:15 file not found
    Press any key to continue
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank

    Re: Cannot boot KUBUNTU

I have this problem with every upgrade. for me, the line root (hd1,0) changes by itself. On my machine, it needs to be root (hd0,0). If you can see in your bios setup which hard drive is the primary boot drive, that one will be 0.

you can try this by hitting e in the grub boot screen for edit, change that line, then hit b to try booting it. if it boots, edit that line in /boot/grub/menu.lst

      cac67 has the right idea.

      File not Found --
That could mean that the device reference (hd1,0) is incorrect, or it could mean that the kernel and/or initrd file names are incorrect (they may have changed, or there's a spelling error, or error in punctuation, etc.).

      A common error, always fixable.

I just finished a How-To about the methods, on this subject.
Look for the part about using the geometry command at a GRUB prompt -- that will (most probably, almost always) tell you what your drives are named (hdx,y). You get a GRUB prompt by hitting the "c" key at the boot menu. When you want to return to the boot menu, press Esc.

You might use your Live Kubuntu CD to access the /boot/grub/menu.lst on your Kubuntu (hdb) and see if the kernel & initrd lines look right. You kernel is located in /boot, and called vmlinuz, in Kubuntu. Make sure all the numbers, letters, periods, hyphens, etc., are right. You can compare and see if it all matches up, and no spelling/punctuation errors.

        Re: Cannot boot KUBUNTU

        Hi Guys
        Thanks for the replies.
        I have fixed the problem.
The updater had downloaded 2.6.22.14 kernel but not the appropriate initrd.img.
The How to Grub Methods - Toolkit was a great help.
        Thanks once again.
Compliments of the season to you.
        Best regards
