Best way to upgrade from Edgy 64 to Gutsy?

    Hi all,

I am running Kubuntu Edgy 64-bit on an AMD 64 processor. I have kept it up to date using Adept.

In Jan 2008, I want to upgrade it to Gutsy. What is the best way to do this? It is a home server and I have installed and tweaked many things so a clean install is not really an option.

Adept offers to perform an "upgrade to a newer version of Kubuntu". Is this the way to go?

Also: Will KDE 4 be eventually included in Gutsy? Or a future Kubuntu version?

    Thanks in advance!

You download a copy of Kubuntu Gutsy with KDE 4 here (please note, it's still in RC form). Once it has been officially released, there will be packages for both KDE 3.5.x and KDE 4.

As for the previous question, I can't give you a definitive answer as I don't have much experience with servers. In my opinion, the safest route would probably be to use the Ubuntu sources.list Generator to generate a list of Feisty repos, manually replace everything in your /etc/apt/sources.list file with the repos generated, and just "update" your computer as you normally would (which will upgrade it to Feisty); then, do the same for Gutsy.

integr8e is correct, in that you will need to upgrade Edgy to Feisty first. Upgrading to Gutsy (if one is going that route) must be done from a Feisty version.

Re: Best way to upgrade from Edgy 64 to Gutsy?

Thanks for all the help. I have now upgraded from Edgy 64 to Feisty 64 and am waiting for about a day or two to see if any problems emerge.

I performed the upgrade from Edgy to Feisty as follows:
Used the Ubuntu sources.list Generator and replaced the sources.list file
Used Adept Upgrade Wizard. This did most of the work but eventually hung while processing hddtemp and slapd. I had to kill it at this point and then spent several hours manually fixing stuff.

        1) LDAP (slapd) was broken quite badly and I had to spend most of my time trying to get this to work. Fortunately, I had all my previous configuration files in an SVN repository. I finally uninstalled slapd altogether and reinstalled it.
        2) A minor fix to kdmrc
        3) I had to recompile the VMWare server module using the instructions on Ubuntu forums because the kernel had changed.
        4) PHP seemed to be broken badly and could not be reinstalled just by itself. I finally uninstalled and reinstalled Apache2, PHP5, phpmyadmin and phpldapadmin completely. If you are upgrading from older versions of these apps and run into problems, I recommend this approach instead of spending potentially hours trying to get these to work.
        5) I ran into some problems with VNC but these were relatively easy to fix.
        6) I use RAID and I always have to fix my GRUB file after a kernel upgrade because /dev/md0 gets replaced with /dev/hda1 and I can't boot.

I estimate I spent about 8 hours of work upgrading from Edgy to Feisty.

The good news is that everything else seems to work, including all my hardware. Samba and printing worked seamlessly after I fixed LDAP. With the fixes in Feisty, I can finally burn very large files (3GB + ) onto a DVD :-) Sensors now work as well.

Recommendations for those upgrading a Production system:
Make a full backup of your Ubuntu partition using dd so that you can roll back to the old OS in case of insurmountable problems.
Do this when there is no time pressure - i.e. on a weekend or when your customers are on vacation.
Have a checklist for things that you will test, e.g. basic login, multiple X sessions, printing, file sharing, Internet connectivity, virtual machines, email, scanning, DVD burning etc. Run the checklist BEFORE and AFTER the upgrade so you know immediately if and when you have problems.

Next: I have to upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy. Let's hope this goes more smoothly!

So what is the recommended way to upgrade from Feisty 64 to Gutsy 64?

Should I use the Full Upgrade button in Adept?

            Upgrading from 7.04 (Feisty)

Follow the instructions exactly! You have to pay careful attention to the steps.

In step 3: "...close and reload" (Meaning, you have to close Adept Manager and then reopen it again)

In step 4 , sub-step 3: You have to quit Adept Manger again.

In step 4, sub-step 4: You must repeat the initial first three steps in the instructions again.

If you do everything according to the instructions, you should be good to go.

Thanks for the info. I have followed the steps exactly.

The Distribution Upgrade program is 56% through the "Installing the upgrades" section. For the last 20 minutes, it has been stuck on "Starting Bluetooth services". Ack! Should I just leave it be? Is there a way to get past this point?

ps -aef | grep blue shows some bluetooth processes.

Should I kill them and/or try to restart them? I don't actually have any bluetooth hardware!

Re: Best way to upgrade from Edgy 64 to Gutsy?

I killed the following processes in this order:
                  kbluetoothd --dontforceshow
                  /usr/lib/bluetooth/bluetoothd-service-audio
                  /usr/lib/bluetooth/bluetoothd-service-input
                  /bin/bash /etc/init.d/bluetooth start

Finally, the Distribution Upgrade program detected this and said:
                  Could not install bluez-utils
The upgrade will continue but the bluez-utils package may not be in a working state

                  followed by:

                  Could not install kdebluetooth
The upgrade will continue but the kdebluetooth package may not be in a working state

Given that you don't have BlueTooth devices, I'd guess that that won't be an issue.

                      Thanks!

Should I uninstall Bluetooth completely? Which packages? kdebluetooth? bluez-utils? Any others?

Next update: The Distribution Upgrade program is now waiting upon package foomatic-filters. I googled around but I cannot figure out if I need this. I do use a locally installed Brother printer with non-free drivers from Brother with CUPS

Interesting. There are two identical(?) instances of this process:
                        /usr/bin/perl -w /usr/share/debconf/frontend /var/lib/dpkg/info/foomatic-filters.postinst configure 3.0.2-20070323-0ubuntu1

Un-installing any 'installed' packages related to BlueTooth shouldn't present any problems. Open Adept Manger and search on bluetooth with the not installed unchecked. The results on my PC are:

                          bluez-cups
                          bluez-utils
                          kdebluetooth
                          libbluetooth2
                          libkbluetooth0

Keep in mind, that I don't have any BlueTooth devices either, yet these are installed, and I haven't had any problems. If you are in doubt at all as to the consequences of un-installing these, open a console and type:
                          Code:
                          sudo apt-get remove --simulate package_name
where packagename is the name of the packages listed above. This will inform you of what packages will actually be removed (without the --simulate option).
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

So I killed first one, and then the other of the foomatic-filters process without seeing any difference to the status of the upgrade program

I even ran the above command line and it completed its task successfully.

So I am stuck with the Distribution Upgrade waiting for foomatic-filters to complete :-(

What to do now? Should I end the Distribution Upgrade and then do a dpkg-reconfigure -a ?

OK, so I had to sorrowfully exit the Distribution Upgrade program. It looks like one of its underlying processes had died.

I am now following the instructions in this link: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...9575#msg109575
