Can't get beyond the Kubuntu password screen

I have a fresh install of Gutsy, which I then did the online update, followed by addon's including Kubuntu, all of which were automatically downloaded and installed. And this is dual boot with XP.

At the password screen, I am able to enter a password, and "enter" which is accepted, the screen goes blank for a few seconds, and comes back to the password screen. Entering a non-valid password results in the red message of wrong password.

    Any thoughts?

I am a newbie to Linux, but other experience goes way back to CPM.

Also looking for a command line manual that is the bare nitty gritty like K & R's "The C Programmer's Handbook" and a Ubuntu/Kubuntu manual. Download would be preferable, but could buy paper

It often happens that the installer on the Kubuntu Live CD is unable to correctly identify and configure automatically the X server configuration for your graphics display chip or card. For the noob, this means the first thing you see after you run the installation routine is a jet black screen with (or without) a blinking white "_" in the upper left corner. The keyboard and mouse are apparently unresponsive. Here is what to do:...

    If xorg.conf is screwed then

    - All you get is text screen.
    or
    - You are in log-in loop.
    or
    - You get empty screen.
    or
    - Display looks weird (you tried to edit xorg.conf).
