    How do you install Lirc on Kubuntu Gutsy?

    This site is great for Ubuntu

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Install_Lirc_Gutsy

    but how do you get

    >>On a system with a GUI, you can install via
    >> $ DEBIAN_FRONTEND=gnome sudo apt-get install lirc

    to work on Kubuntu?? My system just returns to the prompt after doing nothing.

    If your universe repos are activated then you should be able to install from adept / synaptic.

    To activate then do alt+F2 kdesu kate /etc/apt/sources.list and search for these lines:
    deb http://ch.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy universe
    deb-src http://ch.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy universe
    deb http://ch.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy-updates universe
    deb-src http://ch.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy-updates universe
    and maybe:

    deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy-security universe
    deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy-security universe
    if there is a # in front of those lines then delete it and save.

    You can now open up adept / synaptic and do a reload. Seach for lirc and install it.

    I hope that helps

      Thanks but not quite what I meant.
      Sorry maybe I phrased my question incorrectly.

      The GUI runs fine under my Ubuntu Gutsy but does not come up when I install on Kubuntu Gutsy. Is there some way to make the GUI run in Kubuntu?

        If you use adept, you will see that there is a gui called kdelirc. That is the one for kubuntu.

          Already install kdelirc. However that tells me to configure/install a Lirc remote before I can continue. I believe Kdelirc and Irkick are used to associate Lirc actions with programs in Kde.

          I was wondering if anyone running Kubuntu obtained a GUI popup after executing
          "DEBIAN_FRONTEND=gnome sudo apt-get install lirc". I get nothing.

            For me either command does the same exact thing.

            Code:
            DEBIAN_FRONTEND=gnome sudo apt-get install lirc
            or

            Code:
            sudo apt-get install lirc
            Either command will install dialog & lirc

              I have always followed the instructions on the ubuntu community wiki and they did not include a gui. it was a colored/text based deal.

                Tried both under Gutsy Kubuntu on two machines. One an updated install from Fiesty and one a fresh install.
                Unfortunately no (dialog/gui) config option.
                However Lirc is installed, just not configured.

                I think that was true for Feisty and earlier. Now with Ubuntu Gutsy I had a GUI pop up.

                When I run
                Code:

                $ DEBIAN_FRONTEND=gnome sudo apt-get install lirc

                I receive no GUI or text configuration install guide/manager.

                I tried
                Code:
                $ DEBIAN_FRONTEND=text sudo apt-get install lirc

                but still no interface. I must be the only one experiencing this

                Thats fine I can still configuring lirc through some other commands.

                  I doubt that you are. I gave up on getting feedback for lirc, myth, etc issues on this forum. If you haven't already done, post over at the Ubuntu Forums http://ubuntuforums.org/

                  There is a lot more activity there and you are more likely to find someone who has done what you are trying to do. I typically come here for Kubuntu/KDE specific help. Not griping, there are great folks here who spend a generous amount of time helping others.

                    I havent actually as I thought this might more related to the Kde manager.

                    I agree. I have always received very useful advice on Kubuntu related issues.
                    Anyway thanks for your suggestions.
