You get an "A" for "Problem Description and System Hardware Details"!

Can you tell us a little about your installation procedure?

-- Live CD or Alternate Install? I assume it's the 64-bit "AMD" version?
-- How did you partition your hard drive for Linux?
-- How far does the installation get before you observe this error?

And what OS is currently installed? I also note that you have PS/2 keyboard and mouse. That can be a problem. Check your BIOS for USB legacy support. You may only find something along the lines of usb kb support and usb mouse support. If either exists, and is enabled, try disabling it, save the configuration and reboot.

        Re: Kubuntu 7.10 won't install...

OK, first is first. Its not the 64 Bit AMD. I'm running regular old AMD for now. Next up, I'm using the cd that I got mailed from Canonical. I actually got 4 cds total, 2 Ubuntu and 2 Kubuntu. All I did was pop in the cd, reboot my computer and installed it using option 1. My hard drive is not yet partitioned, as I was under the assumption that the cd can and would do that for me. If not, how do I go about doing that without destroying my current OS (I want to dual-boot with my existing OS).

To answer Snowhog, I currently have Windows XP SP2. I'll go double check that USB keyboard/mouse thing in my BIOS. I'll do it right now...

ok... in the bios, I had "USB Legacy Support" which was on Auto. So I disabled it. Now.. on to the partition info.... is the installation cd able to partition and format my drives? or do I need a 3rd party software for that?

          thanks again guys.

            Re: Kubuntu 7.10 won't install...

GParted is on the installation CD, but it is an older version and I'd personally rather make a new bootable GParted Live CD, with which to do the partitioning task. Get the ISO here:

            http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...kage_id=173828

You need a minimum of 2 partitions for Linux -- one for "swap" and one for the rest of the filesystem. If you intend to save important data in your Linux system, then the smart bunny also makes a separate partition for "/home" which is where the user's data goes, so that makes 3. Recommended sizes would be:

            6GB for "/"
            0.5GB for "swap"
the rest of what you have available for "/home"

Report back if making the BIOS setting change enabled you to boot the LiveCD.

And, your welcome. You'll find plenty of support here.

                  Re: Kubuntu 7.10 won't install...

ok guys, we are a no go. I spent the night (last night) defragging the harddrive on which I plan to install Kubuntu. And when I got off work this evening, I put the Gparted cd into my drive and rebooted. Unfortunately, partitioned drives I did not get. Instead, nothing happened. The following is an accurate portrayal of what happened:
                  Code:
                  making tmpfs for /newroot
                  attempting to mount media:- /dev/hda
                  attempting to mount media:- /dev/hda1
                  attempting to mount media:- /dev/hdb
                  attempting to mount media:- /dev/hdb1
                  attempting to mount media:- /dev/hdc
and then nothing. it stops at hdc and does nothing. I can type, but there is no cursor. No commands I can think of work. I'm beginning to think that my machine does not want me to install Kubuntu.

Thanks again for the help guys.

Well, obviously something 'taint right! :P That said, don't give up hope yet. First and foremost, are you still able to boot into your main Win XP OS? I'll assume yes, but I know I'd like to here you say 'yes.'

Yes I am still able to boot into Windows XP. And as far as I can tell, nothing has been modified.

Are you saying the GParted Live CD did not boot? Or it booted, but you didn't see your hard drive?

well I choose the first option, the automatic config, and nothing happened. after that series of attempted mountings, nothing.

                          am I doing something wrong?

When GParted shows its first screen, with the numerous display types, is that where you are having the problem? Scroll down to "VESA" and choose that -- it works on everything.
