    Kunbuntu install on HP dv6605

I have been trying to install Kunbuntu 7.10 for a few days now and I have finally got it to boot up ( in safe graphics mode) That is one issue I need to address and the next is my wireless connection. I pick up two interfaces but can't seem to get them to work (at least the wireless. The light doesn't even light up on the laptop showing that wireless is working) I would like all the info that you can give me because I really like Kunbuntu I have been using it on my desktop for about a month now.

The laptop is an HP dv6605us
with NVIDIA GeForce Go 7150M graphics
AMD 64 Athlon X 2 with broadcom wireless
Has 1 gig memory and 160 g Hard drive

Oh and it is running M$ Vista now you see why I want to switch!

Not all cards/chips are implemented with the lights working.

The first thing I would do is starting with a wired Internet and get all upgrades.
Then find what card/chip is in your PC, and check some of the lists of compatible cards/chips.

If it is supported, then it should work out of the box - given that there is no security in your wireless network.

If it is not supported, there is the Ndisdriver option - use the WinXp driver.

    Edit:

Have a look at the links in this:

How do I fix my boot up problems first? I have to boot up in safe graphics mode and I need to be able to change screen size.

Has anyone successfully installed on this type laptop? If so please help I really like Kunbuntu. I know it will work I just need to learn what to tweak!

The reason I ask the wired network question is this:

NvIDIA graphics in many cases have special drivers that is not supported by Linux.
One of the good things with 7.10 is it has a utility that checks if this is available on the Internet, and suggest you let it fetch and install that. But it cannot do that if there is no Internet. With Internet you should get a small window at the bottom of the screen, to the right side, after booting and finding the network connection.

I'm not sure about Safe graphics log-in, but have you tried to open System Settings, one of the lower options on the programs menu. If this works, the obvious choice is Monitor & Display. There you first will need to give the administrator password (lower right corner of the window.

Then - change the graphics card to VESA, and the monitor to the closest Generic LCD display.

Then - and do this last - check the Size - resolution, and fix if not correct.

Apply, save, exit, reboot. If your booting problem is graphics, you should be able to boot. For better graphics performance you, as said above, need Internet connection.

If you cannot do this, I suggest you start by going from the safe graphics log-in to command line. I think that is an option on the login screen, the list of options icon. Or if I remember right, you can go there <ctrl><alt><F1>.

        From the command line:
        EDIT:
        Code:
        sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Choose not to find automatic - after all, part of your problem is the automatic detection does not work properly.

I would go for VGA for the graphics card, etc. - as indicated above.

In what way is the Envy script different from the Kubuntu 7.10 method at first boot after install? I've tried both.

Envy ATI - all kinds of problems.
7.10 at first boot NVIDIA - no problem at all, and no sweat.

Well that apparently isn't the case for jambak.

If he is not connected to the Internet? Both methods need Internet connection, don't they?

Well, you've probably got a good point there. Guess that's why addressing network connection issue first was emphasized.

Ok I am here on the laptop now running live cd. Do I have to install and reboot to be able to upgrade sources and drivers? I know this is a silly question but I am just curious.

Let's be sure we understand your situation.

                      1) You have Gutsy installed on your PC, but can only boot into safe graphics mode?
                      2) You have good graphics when you boot from the LiveCD?

I have not installed to hd yet still running live cd. That is why I asked if I needed to install to hd first before seeing if I can fix the problem from the live cd.

@jambak, you could use Vista's partition utility to free up just a little partition for experimental purposes, say 8GB, and install Kubuntu in that. That's enough room to maneuver in, but not too big a hit on your hard drive space if it doesn't work out.

When you're running the Live CD, the entire "live" filesystem has to exist in memory -- I don't see how you could install video drivers that way. You can only switch around between the ones that are on the CD. Did you try the "nv" driver yet? That should provide reasonable performance on that Nvidia chip. To try it, open the Konsole and do
                          Code:
                          sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
and answer "NO" the first question about auto-detecting, and then choose "nv" on the next screen for the display type. Then just accept defaults for the mouse and keyboard stuff, choose a resolution that you like, maybe 1280 x 1024, and choose refresh ranges that your LCD can support. When you're finished, you get dumped back to the command line, so enter
                          Code:
                          startx
and you should get a decent display.

If that works - reconfiguring the xserver while running off of the LiveCD - and you get the results you want, then you'll know (reasonably) that you can do the same after an actual installation.
