    install without wiping boot

    Hi guys!
This is my first time to install kubuntu. I have the gutsy live cd. I booted it and tried it out. I must say I'm impressed with how it looks. So I wanted to install it.
However, I have one bit problem. I prepared my harddrive for a triple boot system. The other two systems being windows and archlinux. I used gparted when I prepared my hard drive. So here's how my partition looks.

    sda1 Windows (primary partition)
    sda2-3 Linux (extended partition)
    --sda5 /boot
    --sda6-7 swap
    --sda8 archlinux /
    --sda9 (kubuntu) /
    sda4 Fat32 (primary partition)

I clicked the install icon in the desktop. But when I came to the preparing harddrive part that's were I have problem. The installer wants to format my /boot partition and as you can see, I have that shared with archlinux so Im definitely not wiping it out.

Help. Is there any way to work around this problem?

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: install without wiping boot

    Couple thoughts . . .

The installer, you say, is insisting it re-format the /boot?
That doesn’t sound right. I’ve noticed the installer may insist on re-formatting both the /swap and the root (/), but nothing else.
For this, you can use the regular Live Desktop CD installer, which it sounds like you are using.
When prompted to select a choice for partitioning, it is the “Manual” method that you want (the last one in the list, with a round radio button before it, for you to click in to select.)

This /boot partition, is it a regular “full” boot partition, containing the kernels of both the operating systems?
If so, don’t forget , for Kubuntu, to edit the #groot=(hdx,y) statement in the /boot/grub/menu.lst for Kubuntu. The (hdx,y) there should be the partition of this /boot partition, which looks like (hd0,4) (in GRUB notation – counting starts at zero, so (hd0,4) = the first hard drive hd0, the 5th partition “4”.)

      Worst case - - -
maybe before running the Kubuntu installer, you could copy the /boot files for archlinux out somewhere safe, then let the Kubuntu installer re-format /boot, then go back in and move the /boot archlinux files back where they were.

It helps to have Super Grub Disk handy just in case you need to get into an OS but haven't yet set up the bootloader properly.

yep. it says something that it should reformat all filesystems for important mountpoints such as boot / and the likes.

anyway, i did not insist on the installer to mount boot. I just installed the whole thing into one partition. It included grub and all the files. i just copied the boot files to my boot partition and redirected grub.

ill just delete the files in kubuntu later. anyway, thanks.
