Problems installing Ubuntu & Kubuntu

Hi guys, I’m new to the world of Ubuntu & Linux. I’ve got some problems regarding installation of Ubuntu and Kubuntu. Please help! I’m keen to learn Ubuntu because it’s gaining popularity.

Case #1: MSI with GTC monitor
I just bought a MSI main board (K9VGM-V) with on board VGA and VIA K8M890 chipset, Athlon 64 3800, 1 GB RAM (Transcend), 80 GB HD Seagate. I’m using an old 14” GTC monitor which can display up to 1024 x 768 pixels, 32 bit with 60 Hz refresh rate while using XP with no problem. But when installing Ubuntu from the cd, it froze to the point where it displayed: *Starting deferred execution scheduler atd [OK], *Starting periodic command scheduler crond [OK], * Checking battery state… [OK], *Running local boot scripts (/etc/rc.local) [OK]. I’ve tried all the extra commands provided in the help section, but it didn’t help.
With Kubuntu, the end result was similar. The differences are, it displayed the blue desktop background and the cursor for a moment and than displayed the result as above with some extra lines on top of them, which are: *Starting K Display Manager: kdm. *Starting Common Unix Printing System: cupsd [OK], Starting powernowd… etc/rc2.d/S20powernowd: 156: cannot create /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor: Directory nonexistent, *CPU frequency scaling not supported, *Starting Avahi mDNS/DNS-SD Daemon avahi-daemon [OK], *Starting DHCP D-Bus daemon dhcdbd [OK], *Starting Bluetooth services.

Case #2: Gigabyte with Acer monitor
Another one is a Gigabyte GA-M61SME-S2 with on board VGA and NVidia GeForce 6100 chipset, Athlon 64 3500, 1 GB RAM (Kingston), 20 GB HD Seagate, Acer 33D SVGA monitor. When booting from the cd, all were fine until the desktop showed up. It displayed the desktop but the desktop was kind of rolling and the desktop was displayed 4 or 5 times side by side. The symptom was more like forcing hi res setting on low res monitor. Same result for Kubuntu.

Case #3: Gigabyte with GTC monitor
All specs are the same as case #2, except for the monitor; I used my 14” GTC monitor. The result was, when the desktop is about to show up, it went blank. Same result for Kubuntu

With ECS 661GX-M2, P4 1.8 GHz, 384 MB RAM, 40 GB Maxtor and my 14” GTC monitor, it was OK, also for Kubuntu.

I tried all the extra commands in the help sections, but it didn't help. Try the safe graphic mode as well, still didn't help.

Thank you all for the answers.

For this one you can (a) try booting into command line mode, log in, and execute:

Code:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Don't choose automatic detection. For the graphics I would try VGA or some like that, and then the correct data for your monitor.

If you can do this on #2, then you can always try it out on the two others too.

On #2 possibly it has installed ok - just the monitor set bad, If so, (b) go down to the down left corner on the virtual (rolling) desktop to find K menu, open, find System Settings, open, choose Monitor and Display.

In this window you will need to scroll to the right lower part, a button Administrator mode. This will open a window for your password ... somewhere. You will have to scroll and hunt.

Then, near the top of the window, is a Hardware tab. where you can choose graphics card and monitor. If you find the exact graphics chip - choose that. Else - stay with VGA for the time. In the Monitor part, choose Generic, monitor 1024 x 768.

Then back (Arrow in top left corner) to the Size, Orientation & Positioning tab, to make sure it is set at 60 hZ. (Doing that the first time don't work.)

Hope one of these methods will help you to get starting.

Thanks a lot Nilsa
I'll try your methods. Could you help me with the other cases, because those Gigabyte and ECS main board aren't mine. My main board is the MSI one. I would be appreciated if you or someone else can help.

You say, that in both machines (#1 and #2) there are two video cards (card and chip set). Have you entered the BIOS on booting and checked for any options to disable the onboard video?

No, on all cases, I only use the onboard video. But, if that causes the problems. I'll get a video card.

It's a little out of my league, so this are just suggestions.

First - did you try the "Safe graphics mode" install? F4 at the installation screen, just after booting the CD - and choose 1024x768x16, and then Install or Safe mode?

If that didnt' work, you could try Xubuntu, and then install the K desktop, as described on the Kubuntu web pages. Xubuntu assumes simpler hardware, and the purpose would be to start Linux and take it from there.

If that did not work, you need to install just non-graphical Linux, then X, and then Kde. I'm not the right guy then, at least with the present Ubuntus.

Well, thanks anyway Nilsa. You said earlier to put those code that you gave me, I'm just wondering where do you put those code? I tried the boot: command line, it didn't work. I tried pressing F6 when the menu showed up and erase all the commands there and replace it with the one you told me, but also didn't work. Should I get the desktop showed up first then put in those codes on the command line? I'm confused

Do you know if I can ask the Ubuntu/Kubuntu creator team to help with my problem

Re: Problems installing Ubuntu & Kubuntu

The problems described appear to be in the "video display" category, in all three cases -- a common problem for new Linux users and their new installations. This guidance should help:

http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3085112.0

There is no point jumping between Ubuntu and Kubuntu -- the Linux system underneath is the same and only the Gnome Display Manager (GDM) and K Display Manager (KDM) and the associated suite of desktop packages are different. So you need to pick one and stick with it, and focus on the existing guidance for dealing with graphics chip drivers, such as in the above link. Pick any one of your systems, follow the guidance to set up a VESA GUI, and then take your newfound knowledge and do the same for the other two systems.

No, the *buntu devs have full time jobs developing and maintaining the software -- they don't provide individual technical support. You have to get that from the "community", which basically means "buy a book, use Google, and then ask an informed question when you have narrowed the problem statement down to something reasonably specific". The folks on this forum are fairly generous with help, especially when we can see that the poster has already used Google and the available "How Tos" and is trying to help himself.

Before you try any more install - boot from the CD, ad do both the CD test and the memtest. Memory may look OK to the BIOS, but still can make all kinds of weird install problem. (Been there, done that more times than I care to think about.)

If you find problems, fix them. If not:

First - read the link dibl gave you. If you understand it, and it works - fine.

If not - try this on PC #2:

Boot from the CD, press F4, choose the resolution 1280x1024x16, then install in Safe Graphics Mode. The first two numbers are the screen resolution, the last the colour depth. You need to err on the safe side here.

Then you install. If you are lucky, that's it - for now, just log in and see what happens. If it breaks after that, you will either get a command line, or you can try the <ctrl> <alt> <F1>, and get to the command line.

If this command line is a little like this:

Code:
youaccount@yourcomputer: -$
(not exactly - this keyboard has no tilde, so I just write - )

then you can write the command dibl and I say to do.

if it is like this,root@something: -$

Code:
root@something: -$

try

Code:
login
yourccount
yourpassword
If you can log in like this, do just as said in the first case.

If you cannot go through the entire install - inform us on this:

1. Did the install program ask you for an account name and password?
2. If yes, did you get to reboot, or does the install break before that?
3. If so, if you close the PC, take out the CD and restart - what happens?

Re: Problems installing Ubuntu & Kubuntu

I'm able to get the installation going, thanks to all of you guys, but why is the progress stops @ 94%?

These are quotes from Nilsa:
1. Did the install program ask you for an account name and password?
2. If yes, did you get to reboot, or does the install break before that?
3. If so, if you close the PC, take out the CD and restart - what happens?

1. Yes, just before the installation begin.
2. The installation stops at 94% and I get white screen with lines. I tried pressing the Num Lock key but the Num Lock light didn't respond.
3. If I reboot again, it displays the boot menu. When I chose Ubuntu, well, you start over the booting again, just like when you boot from cd.

Re: Problems installing Ubuntu & Kubuntu

Finally after the long battle..... Bingo!!! I completed the setup process. I used advices from bidl & nilsa and it worked. Yes, you CAN NOT install Kubuntu on 4 GB free space HD which I did on 6 GB. But when I changed it to 20 GB HD, It miraculously (pooof) went fine. Now the only problem is to get the correct display driver working. I've got these files downloaded somewhere from Kubuntu or Ubuntu web. The command is sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-openchrome. I tried it on the command line but it didn't seem to work/respond.
Where should I run these command?

My main board is MSI k9VGM-V, the onboard chipsets are VIA K8M890 & VIA VT 8237A. I use the onboard video. I've AMD 64 - 3800+, 1GB RAM (Transcend). The monitor is GTC. But Kubuntu recognized it as Generic Monitor. If I klik the detect button, it displayed Smile CA6425DL/CB6425DL. Any idea how I might get the correct driver and how to install it?

Great!

The first thing that comes to my mind is - where is what you downloaded? It should be in the same place as your terminal say you are. Try ls in the terminal, and see if it is there. If not - move it or cd to the right place.
