    Gutsy install shuts at 94%

    Right, i'll get straight to the point..i have a Dell vostro 1500 and i want a dual boot laptop with windows xp and Kubuntu - gutsy (7.10) on it.

    Config;
    Intel Core 2 Duo
    2Gb DDR800 RAM
    nVidia GeForce 8800GTS (i think)
    120 gig SATA hard drive

    I've made the following partitions;
    C: (windows) - 22 gigs
    Swap: 2 gigs ( i know i'm supposed to make it double the ram size, but i think the system could handle it okay)
    root partition: 2 gigs (EXT3) (mount point= '/')
    Data partition - 87 gigs or something like that (EXT3 again) (mount point = 'media/sda6')

    Booted with the live cd, everything goes well, did the manual set up of partitions during install, started the installation process..and it just closes when it comes to 82%..i read on the forums that was because i was connected to the internet, so tried again without being conncted to the internet..

    Installation process continues normally through 82% which was a relief, but then it stops and dissapears again, this time at 94% (right when it says 'setting up grub' or 'configuring grub' or something like that) i've restarted to see if grub was installed, but it just boots into windows xp.

    Could someone please suggest possible fixes? i'm frustrated now because i've had my laptop for about a month now and i still haven't been able to have it set up proper.

    P.S: i had another person install Gutsy (without problems) with the same cd on my laptop with no problems at all (he wasn't connected to the internet when it was being installed) so it makes sense my setup stopping at 82% but i can't figure what i'm doing is so different from what he did.

    P.P.S: The cd is from the first week when the new distribution released, i'm not aware of any updates in the new version since then, or if the problem is because of that.

    I think your problem is the size of your / (root) partition. 2Gb isn't sufficient. On my system, I have an 8Gb root partition. It is presently 42% used (3.2Gb). You probably need to redo your partitioning and make / (root) larger. 8Gb is sufficient. 10Gb would be generous.

      Umm, i'm not sure what the root partition was the last time it was installed..but shouldn't a 2 gig partition still work? because the install guide somewhere read that i should have a minimum of 750 mb for the root.

      Code:
      People often ask me what the best size is for the root partition. The short answer is between 500 MB and 1 GB. A long answer is that it depends what you plan to install. A very basic setup, with limited tools available, but perfectly usable, could fit in 70 MB.

      So according to the article, shouldn't this he sufficient to install linux on it? i'm not disagreeing, just wondering why i've read the root partition to be quite small (on multiple websites)

      Do you think i could take some space off the swap? or should i leave that at 2 gig?

        No. Snowhog is right -- I used a 6GB partition for "/" and it is now 56% full, running Kubuntu Gutsy with a reasonable set of installed packages. You have little hope with less than 4GB.

          Why does your name sound so familiar?

          Did you have a different avatar about 2 months ago? because i think you helped me install VMware on my linux (on what used to be my desktop)

          I still can't thank you enough, hello

            The dibl has 'aged' a might since you last saw him a few months back. Used to look a lot younger, wore suspenders and a Tyrolean style hat.

              It's installed!

              Thanks a ton for the quick answer, i don't know how many weeks i would have spent looking for a fix for my problem..i dont think i would have ever found the actual problem on my own. I owe being a linux user to you

              Thanks a ton man.

                That's great -- glad to hear it!

                Yes, I had a little androgynous elf avatar -- I still have it stashed away, in case I need him. The one I have now looks like Snowhog.

                  using no Internet turns off all auto updates and may also brake the add/remove programs as well

                  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ty/+bug/154095 (still not sure why this has not been flaged as some sort of importance as for new users this bug can affect the working of the OS later on)

                  due to the way 7.10 installs when it gets to 82% it trys to download 9MB from the Internet (apt stage for sources i think) if your performing an upgrade or installing fresh best Must have the Internet disconnected or setup has an high chance of failing (on-line repositories failing to respond in good time) if your doing an upgrade when it fails most likey end up with an none working box

                  after you have installed and ignoring the repositories removed msg, do the below to get updates working

                  goto System > Admin > software sources

                  1 Tick all box's apart form source code (do not think norm users need that)
                  2 Pick your Download From server location (as it picks main server by default click on search if you cant see one for you)
                  3 Goto updates and tick the first 2 options
                  4 [Optional] change the auto up date check to [Download all updates in background] (asmuing you do not have an hard disk that is very small its an better option so your ready to install when you are ready just means you do not need to have to wait for them to download)
                  do not recommend auto install with out confirmation as it may not wait for all updates to be install when shutting down the PC, as it make brake your box

                  Kbuntu users
                  Cick on the K bottem left > System (Not system setting) > Adept Package Manager > Adept > Manage Repositories
                  do the same as above for steps 2 to 4

                    That looks like a folder that you might find on a Ubuntu system. I don't think you'll find it on Kubuntu.

                        In Kubuntu, we use System > Adept Package Manager > Adept > Manage Repositories to set repositories. Or, some of use use Synaptic to do so.

                          I've seem to have gotten the following things working through some good searchign on ubuntu forums;

                          Things working now include;
                          touch pad
                          sound
                          Nvidia drivers
                          Wireless card

                          Things not working:
                          touch pad seems a bit jittery, like it's on speed. Downloaded Ksynaptics but it says something like please add the option SHMconfig "on" in the etc/x11/xorg.conf

                          Although sound's working, the laptop speakers do not cut off when i plug in headphones, can't use them in public places because of this.

                          Flash player to view youtube videos etc is not yet installed, still trying to find a way to get it to work.

                          And a lot more things are probably not working (which i'm still unaware of)

                            i still just need a fix for the sound problem though, just want my sound to work only on my headphones when they're plugged in. Any ideas?

                              i update the info now

                              still users Should not have to do this any way

                              i ran out of space on my VM drive so i cleaned out allot of the Kbuntu ones (each ubuntu and kbuntu that comes out or before it comes out i give them an good going at to see how thay are progressing and Gusty is 1 step backward from Festy Way to many First install bugs and usability bugs later on)

                              i think Kbuntu is better for new users then ubuntu is (mostly due to where the main Menu button is placed and has More GUI config options in system , mean less messing with config)

                              i realy did have an go at this one to see how it works i even started to report bugs as well (still getting me head around the bug reporting as i find it hard to find bugs i reported or where to report them)

                              due to lots of bugs best not to use this Gusty (2 fresh installs of it and the updater fails as its about to do Lib6 with some error about ) stick with festy or untill or if thay bring an updated gusty disk (7.10.1)
