    NOT IMPRESSED.....

    >

Started up Kubuntu 7.04 as I usually do. I processed the "updates" that were waiting to be installed / upgraded via Adept icon on the toolbar next to the clock.

After the upgrades were done, a message appeared on the screen, letting me know that a "new version" was available, and would I like it installed. "Yes" was my answer, and then asked if I would like to upgrade to Gutsy Gibbon 7.10. I again answered "Yes".

After about 45mins-1 hour later, the files had finished downloading. Then it happened. About 2 mins into the installation, a message appeared, and said that the 'debconf' package may not be in a working state. An option to continue was chosen and another message about a lib file (not sure of the name) with the same message as before.

With each of the messages an option to submit a bug report was given. Each time I selected "bug report", each time the "hour glass" displayed for about 30 secs, then disappeared. Figuring the report was sent, proceeded, and was given the second error, submitted the report, hour galls came and went.

Contined... Screen sat and sat and sat, and said that the install would take 3h 57mins to complete. It sat there for at least 20mins displaying the same message.

During the loading of all the upgrade files, it said that I was not to cancel the process at all. I had no choice. Rebooted, and of course, you guessed it, it's "broken". I know, you are probably saying that I shouldn't have interfered, but it wasn't my fault that the installation files had problems. My choices were limited. "Continue" or "Abort". I figured that "Abort" was not an option, because of the warning during installation, so, "Continue" was my only option.

It has taken me "a dog's age" to set up 7.04 "the way I like it". Now, it seems, I may have to re-install. It would have been quicker to install from the "iso" image online, than having to go throw a broken upgrade.

If the installation files are "broken", then why allow the upgrade at all?

The upgrade tool still seems to be incredibly buggy, I've had more success just by updating my sources.list file (where the list of available repositories is kept; /etc/apt/sources.list) from the Feisty to Gutsy repos, and "updating" (sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get upgrade, etc.).

When offered to upgrade online, rather than having to go through the steps manually, the chance was too good to pass up. I cannot even attempt a manual upgrade. All I get now is the flashing cursor in the top left hand corner of a black screen. I suppose I could try the recovery option from grub. If it anything like windblows safe-mode, then I may not be able to do much. Anyway, I have very few options. I will try through recovery mode and see how it goes.

Before you try that, boot into Recovery Mode and enter the following command to reconfigure your xorg.conf:
        Code:
        sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Choose "vesa" as your video driver, and just select the default answers for the remaining of the questions. It sounds like your video driver became corrupted somehow, this will provide a temporary fix.

This is just a silly question but did you have automatix installed on your 7.04 installation?

            Intergr8e,

Bit the bullet and chose a complete install from a freshly downloaded iso image of Gutsy.

            Fintan,

Yes, Automatix2 was installed some months back. Why?

Thankyou for all your advice, guys.

            Much appreciated.

            regards

Yep -- I think it was about the same during Edgy > Feisty, which is why I just bit the bullet this time around and made a new Alternate Install CD and started from scratch. The basic OS installation only takes about 20 minutes, and of course then you are going to spend the next several days getting it configured the way you want it.

FYI I installed Fedora 8 last weekend, just for comparison purposes -- that installation (from a DVD) just crawled along for several hours. *buntu is fast to install.

Well that explains your problem. Automatix is not (yet) supported by *ubuntu so with automatix installed any upgrade may frail. This is documented (admittedly not very well) somewhere.

                Just a quote from here:
                http://pimpyourlinux.com/linux-featu...buntu-install/

                Upgrading from Edgy to Feisty:

For the first six months after feisty was released, many users had problems upgrading, because they had used Automatix in Edgy to install packages that were not supported by the Ubuntu community. Scott’s blog talks about some of these issues in more detail. Therefore, it is likely that there will be new problems as the feisty community upgrades to the next version of Ubuntu.

Scott makes the point that Automatix wouldn’t be as problematic if the members of the community came together to form a team to support it. Right now, the existing Automatix team is a good start, check out the Automatix forums as well.

Users should be warned before they install software from outside the main component, or even outside of the Ubuntu repository that they are likely to cause problems when it’s time to upgrade.

                  Re: NOT IMPRESSED.....

As a replacement for Automatix2, check out Medibuntu; it adds a non-standard repository to your list of repos that allows you to download various codecs and software *buntu cannot include in its standard repos for legal reasons, you shouldn't even need Automatix2.
