7.04 Feisty -> 7.10 Gutsy upgrade has broken my installation

Argh! I tried to upgrade and from Feisty to Gutsy yesterday and it's broken my install! If I try booting the newest kernal in my GRUB list:

    7.10 kernal 2.6.22-14-386

I get a never ending error message:

device mapper linear: dm-linear device lookup up failed 254:1

That seems to be a known issue after googling around. If I use the next kernal down the list:

    7.10 kernal 2.6.20-16-386

    I get:

mdadm: No devices listed in the conf file were found

Then the prompt appears, if I try and start X I can't. It shows these error messages:

Failed to load module "glx" (module does not exist)
Failed to load module "type1" (module does not exist)
Failed to load module "nvidia" (module does not exist)

    What should I do?

I'm quite keen to fix my current install and I'm guessing I will have more luck with the second kernal. I'd like to avoid a complete reinstall as setting up the wifi and the propietry NVidia drivers is laborious.

I was happy with my Feisty install... can never leave well enough alone...

      All righty then.
First question: Do you have a RAID set up? If not, you don't need mdadm. Just uninstall it with Adept.
      For external use only.

No RAID set up. MB supports it but I'm not using it. Thank you so much for the help! I can now boot into the newer kernel!

        I ran:
        apt-get remove mdadm

Rebooted and all is well. I still get the other message but for like less then a second and then the GUI appears. I can live with that. Thanks again.

        Now for Envy take2...
