Today is the first time I saw the "New Version Available" notice on Adept. Well, I thought I'd try it!. The download went OK, but the Install was a disaster. I got so many errors I lost track, and it finally just hung up. My only option was to reinstall 7.04 from scratch. All this, after I spent several months fine tuning my 7.04 until I had it purring like a kitten. I had a lot of files, special software, and settings that I may never be able to recover. So much for progress! I would recommend caution trying to upgrade from one version to another, cause it's not idiot proof, and there are no restore or repair options.

Re: RE: 7.04 to 7.10 Upgrade is a disaster
Sorry to hear about your troubles. That sucks. Wish I had read this a couple of hours ago. >
I just attempted to install Gutsy, the system hung up after an error, and now it will boot, but not many things work and there about a hundred items in lost and found. Can anyone point me in the right direction to begin fixing this mess, or should I just wipe the drive and start over? They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security deserve neither liberty or security -- Benjamin Franklin<br /><br />Titanium Powerbook 867 768MB 60GB<br />Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger 40 GB<br />kubuntu 7.10 "Gusty Gibbon" noob 20 GB

Personally, I agree (and it's why I haven't yet upgraded my Feisty to Gutsy). Given that Adept Upgrading can/has/and does break an existing system, I don't think doing a version upgrade via Adept should be made as easy as it is (click this button!).Windows no longer obstructs my view.

I'm at work, so don't have access to some of my notes, but ....
You can upgrade with Adept. But you have to follow the steps carefuly, else ....
There are HOWTOs on upgrading Feisty to Gutsy. At least one is on the Ubuntu site. What really needs to be done by the user, is to prepare for any upgrading of an existing system before they actually do it. That means doing a bit of research first.Windows no longer obstructs my view.

Re: RE: 7.04 to 7.10 Upgrade is a disaster
Thanks for the advice. I did do some research, enough that I ran
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get update
and I am now posting from gusty instead of tiger (OS X)
ps sorry, I don't know how to put the terminal commands in the box yet.

Re: RE: 7.04 to 7.10 Upgrade is a disaster
Update: I finally gave up on Gutsy and reinstalled Fiesty. The reinstall of Fiesty went smoothly, and it's purring like a kitten, and solid as a rock. Gutsy, on the other hand after a couple of days of trying to get it to function has proven to have more bugs than a 4th of July picnic. I don't think Gutsy is ready for the big-time. I was unable to successfully complete a single download or update from Adept. Maybe I'll try again in a few months, after all the bugs are worked out.AMD Athlon 64 4800x2 ; Biostar Tforce 550 ; 2gb ; dual-boot Kubuntu 8.04 & Kubuntu 9.04; Dual-boot XP & Vista.

Re: RE: 7.04 to 7.10 Upgrade is a disaster
I have a dumb question. If there is a guide of things to do BEFORE you upgrade, then why is it offered as a simple update without ANY warnings? My wife asked me when if was offered on her computer and I told her to go ahead. Now I have no choice I guess but to reinstall. Good thing she is setup for dual boot with windows xp.
The whole purpose I thought, with the whole Ubuntu family, is to have Linux easy and user friendly. This update is neither.
Now I will go find the guide before I update mine, and see what options I have to correcting the wife's computer.
Thanks for the heads up guys.

Re: RE: 7.04 to 7.10 Upgrade is a disaster
I hate to bitch since Kubuntu is free and I love what's happening with Linux in general lately.
But:
The Gutsy experience is not even close to Feisty for me. I've been fooling around with Gutsy since the day of final release. Lot's of problems. Screen res magically changing by itself from one reboot to the next. Wallpaper dissappearing. Desktop icons vanishing. After weeks of effort I could never get Gutsy to print to my XP shared printer. The LAMP stack has problems.
Just got done reinstalling Feisty.......ahhh stability
One question: how long will the Feisty repos be updated/maintained?
