Help Me Please

Hi, names McKenna, completely new to Linux started looking into a couple of days ago and got recommended kubuntu as a good version to start with for such a beginner as me.

Found and downloaded the desktop or live cd so I could just boot it and test it but I'm having problems with it already.

I get the kubuntu boot menu up, but then I select for it to start kubuntu and then nothing happens and my monitor even goes on standby. Tried to check the disk and the same happens, so any advice please.

Oh and if this is in the wrong area let me know.

It will be helpful if you can provide the following information:

Type of PC - desktop or laptop and make/model
Make/model of video card/chip
Type of internal HDs (if you know): IDE, PATA, SATA, ...
# and type of external HDs
Current OS on the PC

Should have realised that ok here we go, I'm on a custom system so can't give you a model number so;

AMD Athlon 64 FX-53 processor
Ati Radeon X800 graphics card
SATA hard drive
Running WinXP
Have an external hard drive but dont need that for the linux at the moment, and thats just your bog standard HDD

With the LiveCD, boot the safe VGA mode. See if you can get it running and to the desktop. If that doesn't work, reboot. At the menu, press F6. Backspace over the splash and quiet options and then press enter. This is going to let you see 'what's going on' during the boot process. At some point things are going to stop. Note at what point this happens and post back with the information. And for the moment, I'd disconnect the external HD.

Hope 2 things, that I can get it working, and that I like it lol, will still use windows as I need it for my comp games but add fed up of same old same old with windows and want something different.

Well it still stops on the safe mode, and did the backspace over the comands and it seemed to run for alot longer before stopping doing anything maybe it just becuse its spending time sending all the info to the screen i have no clue.

Well the line it stopped on was as follows;


* running local boot scripts (etc/rc.local) [OK]

and it stops there, the screen moves to damned fast for me to write down error codes as they scroll and did notice one or two but i don't think they were anything serious.

One thing I did notice on the final screen was;

*starting powernowd....
/etc/rc2.d/S20powernowd: 156: cannot create /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0//cpufreq/scaling.governor: Directory nonexistant.

Dunno if that means anything to anyone.

One thing to check is the BIOS for any power management controlls. If your BIOS does have APM (Advance Power Management or the like) and it is enabled, try disabling it, saving and rebooting.

Yup. IMHO, there are a lot more 'learn't by the seat o'my pants' Linux "experts" than there are true system gurus. A lot of here in this Forum fall into the former category, I think. I know I do.

But you are correct - it is a learning experience. Some find that aspect of using Linux part of the appeal. For others, it's what turns them off from using Linux.

Well it's interesting so far.

Right Avanced Power Management disabled in the BIOS and it's still stopping at;

*running local boot scripts (/etc/rc.local) [OK]

Have also noticed on that screen the following line;

grep: /etc/default/locale: No such file or directory.

I'm wondering if some of this is due to it being the desktop CD.

Do you think it would be worth downloading the desktop DVD version for me to try out?

IT can't hurt to try the DVD. That's the Alternate I think. It has a lot more on it. I wouldn't think it would make any difference, but ....

Your PC is a 64-bit machine. Is the LiveCD you are using for the 64-bit installation?

Yep i got the amd 64 edition as thats the processor type I have.

Well I'm downloading the DVD version, lets face it might as well give it a go, I have some RW DVD's somewhere so I can easily wipe one of them to give it a test. Just have to wait a couple days for it to download.

Erm also should I be worried about my Advanced Power Management being switched off

My comps not gonna blow up or anything is it lol.

Should also mention it's not actually locking up it's sitting there but not frozen.

When I switch the machine off it shuts itselt down properly with the system saying it going for a system halt and then saying when it's ready to shut down.
