Upgrade from Feisty claims no internet connection

I've just upgraded my Dell Dimension 3000 from 7.04 to 7.10.

Now KNetworkManager claims I don't have an active device, and I can't get on the net. Probably this is doc'd somewhere but I dunno where.

    Help? TIA!

Hey Snowhog, many thanks for the very fast reply.

Thing is, my desktop, as I should have said in my original post, is not wireless but hard-wired to the cable. It was working fine through the install, and I updated about 1100 packages, then rebooted, and the net was gone. Is there an equivalent of the doc you pointed me to (which will probably be helpful for my laptop when I convert it, but one thing at a time) for a non-wireless connection?

Have you checked K Menu | System Settings | Network Settings | Network Connections and ensured that under Available Network Interfaces, your connection is listed? If it is, you need to ensure that it is actually enabled. You'll have to access the Administrator button to make any changes.

Well, this is no doubt the issue: I just tried to pick System Settings from the K Menu and it gives me a SigSegv. Wow! What do I do now?

Again, many thanks for the blazing-fast response.

Okay, that fixed my System Settings and I can now verify that my Ethernet network device is enabled. But I'm still not on the net...

Re: Upgrade from Feisty claims no internet connection

When in Available Network Interfaces (as Administrator), did you check that:
                Routes is 0.0.0.0
Domain Name System contains the IPs for your ISPs Domain Name Servers

That when you click Configure Interface it shows TCP/IP Address as:
                Automatic dhcp

And that Activate when computer starts is checked?

Re: Upgrade from Feisty claims no internet connection

Perhaps I should know this already, but I don't know how to determine the IPs for my ISP's DNS. I don't remember setting that when I first installed Kubuntu, but maybe I just forgot. (Shouldn't that info have been preserved during the upgrade?)

Also, I should have said that before the upgrade I was running Privoxy; does that make a difference?

I've set Routes to 0.0.0.0, TCP/IP address to Automatic DHCP, and checked Activate when computer starts.

Are you then, running behind a firewall? I'm not familiar with Privoxy. Have you checked it's configuration requirements to ensure something there didn't change when you upgraded? As to ISP's DNS IP's, you can simply contact them and ask.

Re: Upgrade from Feisty claims no internet connection

As to firewall, I have Firestarter, but it says it can't find its configuration data and exits, so I assume it's not running. I have no other firewall.

Privoxy is a HTTP/HTTPS-only proxy that blocks ad servers. I'm checking the docs now but I haven't found any reason to think that it would have been changed. The files don't seem to have been updated, according to ls -lt.

My impression was that I was obtaining the DNS IP automagically. My XP laptop (where I'm typing this) says that's what it does. Am I wrong? If so, I can try to reach everyone's best friend, Comcast...

Re: Upgrade from Feisty claims no internet connection

Is it the case that Kubuntu cannot automatically determine the IP address of the DNS server, as Windows does? I've been trying to reach Comcast without success, maybe because it's Sunday night, but I'm afraid my wireless connection will be gone by tomorrow because we're having trouble with our new wireless router. If that happens I won't be able to connect at all, or ask further questions without going to the library to use their computer...

Okay, I've been reading some other threads. One suggested seeing what "ipconfig" returns. It's on the other machine so I can't copy and paste, but it starts with this:

                              ----
                              KABOOM!!!
