live cd error and install fails

I have just managed to d/l the dvd image, only took 2 weeks on dialup

Checksum was ok so first thing was read the manual, mm appendix A was not viewable and the rest of the manual seemed to have not a lot to do with Kubuntu, or at least the K part. So next thing was to try booting on the spare system I built for testing this before I try and get it on my main boxes. From the start menu I selected check CD, eventually it reported back that 1 file was corrupt, but did not tell me which one I made an assumption it was the manual file that I could not read and proceeded to try the install.

The LiveCD loaded though very few of the apps worked, selected install to see how it would go. System is an AMD64FX with nvidia card and new empty 300 Gb harddisk. The first few steps were OK for locale and other settings then the error message that partman would not load and the choice to retry, ignore or abandon. Retrying did nothing and ignore completed the rest of the preliminary questions befor the system fell over as there was no harddisk partitioned or formatted.

Rebooted LiveCD and tried manual running of partman, it would not start but there was a gui partitioner available (sorry forgot its name) and with that I could create a basic partition table with /, swap and /home but install fell over in the same way.

Is there a way to find out which file is in error on the dvd? as it seems that it must be something other than a manual that is broken. Then I can d/l just one file instead of spending 2 weeks d/l the whole thing again.

Once I get past the first install I can then start experimenting with the install until I can get it to work the way I want before I upgrade my work boxes

You don't need to download the DVD image -- the CD ISO would be bad enough on dialup!

    :P

I prefer the Alternate Install CD, versus the Live CD -- gives you a bit more visibility and control during the process.

The *buntu installer is VERY picky about the CD image quality, so you need to (a) verify the md5sum on the downloaded file, and (b) set the burn speed to 4X, and (c) burn chicken feathers or say a chant to the little monkey god.

    (c) was a joke, but you can do it if it helps!

It is not really clear what the difference between the CD and DVD versions is, I assumed the DVD was the best option as it would contain more packages which would reduce the d/l problems later. Having the packages on disk would make installing on 5 boxes quicker than d/l the packages 5 times via dialup.

You imply that there is less control with the DVD install, in what way? I have already seen that the standard install and the standard KDE contain a lot of rubbish that I do not want. I definitely do not want SELinux to be installed for example and with KDE I do not want package groups installed I want to be able to pick which components and apps are installed before install, especially if I am going to be wasting days d/l something that I will delete.

As for burning a DVD, the checksums are OK as I said but where in the instructions are people told to burn at 4X? I am tempted to think that if the installer is so flaky then perhaps the rest of the distro is just as unreliable?

I have burnt so many chicken feathers that my hens are now bald.

I wouldn't go for a distro such as kubuntu or ubuntu with a dialup modem. You see, it depends too much on aninternet connection to connect to the repositories and download the packages you need. There are also updates which are very, very frequent and if you have a dialup connection on your target pc and not broadband, it could get quite tiresome.

As for the stability or reliabitly of the distro, there is no need to worry. It's simply among the best.

I see no reason why Kubuntu should be any worse than any other distro, unless you know something I don't.

I have used several distros over the last 8 years without the updating process getting overly tiresome. I use normally only about 20 apps which means there are only a few hundred packages that I need. I tend only to use stable versions as I want to use the boxes not keep repairing things and normally I build from source so I have more control over updating.

I am in any case d/l the alt CD to see if that goes any better.
