upgrade from Feisty: 439 packages are not upgraded

I did a manually upgrade as told in many places here on the forums and ended up where I am now:
The computer doesn't reach the internet and doesn't start X11.
When I do apt-get upgrade I get the message that 439 packages are not upgraded - I miss the reason here. How can I find it?
The reason why I have no X11 is because there is a version mismatch on my i810 driver.
I don't know why I have no internet which is perhaps most annoying. But it seems that all needed packages were downloaded.
So please help me on diagnosting why the packages are not upgraded!

    Did you also do a 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' ?

(apt-get upgrade won't upgrade packages that would need to install new packages or uninstall packages...similar to 'Safe Upgrade' in package managers)

Hurrah! This did the trick for me. I wished I had known a day ago. I now have a working system. I had to restart the upgrade process a couple of times. But it worked and that's important.
