Newbie who needs help with installation

The boot process is freezing at the "Saving VESA state ..."

I read a few threads about video issues but I can't get anything to respond while its frozen.

    I have a Dell Inspiron 7500.

I'm very new so talk slow

Where along in the install are you? Can you get to a terminal? (That's the place where you can type commands by the way) If you can get to a terminal try typing
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
and hit enter. It'll ask for the password you should have already set, then you'll get an interface which will let you change which driver you're using. Try something other than VESA maybe.

I made a live cd. I put the live cd in and restarted the notebook. The cd gave various options for starting. I choose the option that mention installing on the computer. While playing with the other option I noticed one of the was so you could put in code for how you want it to start. Maybe I should put that line you mentioned there?

So it's not even starting the graphical part at boot time then? That's weird. You've tried the "start ubuntu in safe graphics mode" in that menu though, right? If you haven't given that a shot, give it a try. You can still install when you're fully booted in. But no, you can't put that command I listed in there, that's only for special boot options, it's not a terminal. But it's just as well, I didn't realize you weren't even past the initial booting up, so that command wouldn't work anyway, since I think it needs the system to be installed first.

Try reburning the cd at less than 8x speed. This is a recurring thing with *ubuntu iso's. I don't know why. If you want to install use the alternate cd.

This may not help but I hope it does

I am wanting to install. I downloaded the alternate CD.

Does anyone have good instructions on how to do the install from the alternate CD?

Am I supposed to burn an ISO file? If so, I couldn't find it.

The Alternate CD file you downloaded is the .iso file you need. That's the file that you identify for burning to a CD using an appropriate program (K3b works just fine).

The download I got had to be unpacked from winrar. It made its own folder.

                  Is this the wrong download?

YES. You need the ISO image for the Alternate Install CD (correct version for your PC architecture -- 32-bit or 64-bit).

It will install correctly without an active Internet connection, but you won't know whether the ethernet or wireless connections are working until you attempt to connect.

Re: Newbie who needs help with installation

For some reason my wife's pc was not recognizing that alternate version as an iso. I downloaded it on my pc and burned a copy.

The installation was a success on my Dell Inspiron 7500.

I I have to use a network adapter to connect to the internet. I didn't have it installed because I figured it wouldn't be able to set it up automatically. I'll search more on it but any links on how to setup the network adapter would be great.

                        Thanks everyone.

                          Here's what I found:

click K>System Settings>Network Settings then click the Administrator Mode, click you adapter and click Configure Interface then enter the correct settings. Make sure to check the box that says Activate when the the computer starts.

Do I need to use the CD that came with the adapter or is kubuntu able to figure everything out?

What type of adapter? Router? Wireless, wired, or both? Make and model.

I hooked up the adapter and didn't have to do anything. I'm using the kubuntu PC now.

                              Thanks
