    Kubuntu 7.1 installation problems

I have been trying to install Kubuntu 7.1. Install starts normally but when it gets to the "Scanning Mirror" stage it takes a long, long time and then gives an error message to the effect that security updates on security.ubuntu.com cannot be accessed and you should investigate this later. It also says that commented out entries for security.ubuntu.com have been added to /etc/apt/sources.list.

At the end of install, all runs perfectly except that I cannot install any other packages such as Firefox, all are greyed out in the package list.

I checked out sources.list and it basically is a list of the appropriate directories on my local mirror ftp site, gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ as well as security.ubuntu.com. All entries are commented out and uncommenting does not have any effect, it will not let me install any other software.

Anyone with knowledge of how to correct this situation ?

    Thanks

Dont' worry about that, that was probably bad connection to the mirror. Open adept manager, in the adept option look for manage repositories. In software kubuntu i have all the options checked, in updates i have all of them checked as well. You might want to change the repository , you can do that by: in sotware kubuntu>download form>other>find best server. close it and it should reaload all your repositories and packages.

Just a question, did you do a sudo apt-get upgrade after changing your sources.list file?

I had exact same problem when I installed 7.10 and what juantovarm says about ticking the entries in adept>manage repositories is how I solved it. (Note: unhashing the entries in /etc/apt/sources.list will have the exact same effect). During the install was the only time the the connection to the mirror failed for me.

Thanks to juantovarm & marshallbanana for their replies. I have done sudo apt-get install which gave a satisfactory response - no error messages.

Changing the repository did not have any effect, I would have expected it to change the entrys in sources.list but this file was unchanged.

Going back to the original sources.list file, before all the commented-out entries, there was a line "Line commented out by installer because it failed to verify". I do not understand this as I checked the local repository, gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ and all directories and files etc were there. What is not verifying ?

I even tried pointing it to the main ubuntu server but no effect. I think the main problem is that sources.list is not being modified, the permissions are OK.

It is probably something simple & stupid but there you go.

        Thanks again.

Guys using the Australian mirrors were having this exact same problem over the weekend, posted on Ubuntu Forum. I dunno what's going on - possibly server upgrades or something. You might need to do the "wget" thing to re-establish your ability to use the particular mirrors.

            Re: Kubuntu 7.1 installation problems

In reply to dibl, I don't think it is a server problem as I can browse to the archive server and browse it's content. What is more to the point, if I make changes to servers using the Manage Repositories tool, the changes are not reflected in sources.list.

I also have Ubuntu 7.04 on my machine which happily downloads software and any repository changes do modify sources.list as expected.

I think it is a kubuntu problem, but what ?

              Re: Kubuntu 7.1 installation problems

I suppose it's possible there's a bug of some sort, but why does mine work? You haven't installed Automatix, have you? That "commented out by installer .... failed to verify" seems to be significant. That didn't happen to me when I installed Gutsy. I wonder if there was some problem at that point in time, which may not exist today? :P

                Re: Kubuntu 7.1 installation problems

According to the error message given by the installer the problem was simply a temporary failing of the installer to contact the servers. It doesn't seem overly widespread though so I'm guessing its not a bug. I got the impression in my case it was simply that the livecd was simply not connecting to my wireless network (not surprising as I never set it up to do so) and therefore was unable to contact the servers leading it to comment out those lines in the adept repositories list. Simply uncommenting them solved the issue in my case.

As for your current problem, the source.list/adept disconnect, maybe try the following in the command line:
                sudo dpkg --configure -a
(or maybe reconfigure, whats someone with a better knowledge of how to refresh adept think?)

Or you could just manually uncomment the relevant sources.list lines.
