    monitor turns off when booting

    Hardware
    ASUS M2A-VM HDMI Motherboard
    AMD 5400+
    2 Gb DDR2 ram
    500 Gb SATA HD
    Nvidia 8500GT Graphics
    Acer AL2216W widescreen monitor
    Resolution 1650x1080

    Kubuntu Gutsy 64Bit

When starting up I see Grub then a message across the bottom of the screen
    Kernel Alive
    Direct Mapping Tables upto 10000000 @ 8000-d000

Then the screen will go black and the monitor turns off (no input)
until it gets to the log in then it all works fine.
At shut down I see nothing at all after my choice to reboot or shut down
This happens whether or not I have the Nvidia drivers installed

I thought it could be a Fiesty problem so I installed Gutsy but the same thing happens,WinXp-64 boots up fine.

Is there a setting I'm missing?
this is getting annoying. If it stops with an error message I won't see it.

    Thanks for the help

Same thing happened to me with 386 kernel.
Temporary solution was to remove vga=791 from /boot/grub/menu.lst
This allows large kid like characters on the terminal.
    Better than nothing at all.

      thanks for the reply curtdodds

      I tried removing vga=791 from /boot/grub/menu.lst

It made no difference at all
I also found a chart with the resolutions on to edit the file but none of them worked either
