install fine, then boots to blank screen

I got an older computer from work. Not too old, it is a p4 1.7.

I am trying to get it running with Gutsy for my parents, but when I do, it installs fine, asks me to reboot, I do, then it goes trough GRUB to the splash screen, completes that, then goes to a blank screen when it should go to the GUI login.

I can Ctrl-Alt-F1 to a prompt, but no matter what I have tried there, I can't get a GUI to load.

Any ideas?
