About to intall but got unexpexted result from QTParted

About to try 7.10. Newr machine, new HDD, 160gig.
    Booted up from Live CD.
    Kde started fine.
So I thought I would use QTParted to organise the drive.
Following some posts on these forums, (thanks people)I went for:

    sda1: 20G - ext3 - for kubuntu /
sda2: 1G - linux swap - for Kubuntu to use for swap
    sda3: 50G - ext3 - for Kubuntu to use for home
    sda4: 78.04G - ext2 - for data

After partitioning is done, QTParted lists the two partitions I set to ext3 with file type "unknown" (actually it says "unknow".)

And the ext2 partition is listed as having 1.23G of used space!

Should I worry about this? Will Kubuntu sort it out during installation?

On reboot, dmesg shows the finds the drive is found. Also that sda2 was written to as a swap area.

But fdisk says: X Error: BadDevice, invalid or unitialised input device 167
    Major opcode 144
    Minor opcode 3

I don't really know what that means... off to Google for now.

I will take the advice elsewhare on this site, to foget about QTParted as soon as possible.
But meanwhile, it is not convenient for me to burn a Gparted live CD at present.

Might try partitioning again with an old Knoppix or Morphix. But any advice would be gratefully accepted.

I don't know what qtparted is "thinking", for that matter I don't know why kubuntu still ships with qtparted. It is not the best choice.... So to be safe I would suggest downloading gparted live:
    http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php

and use that to check / move / resize / format your partitions.

Why did you set the /data partition to ext2? Why not ext3 or fat32 (usefull if you still have a windows flying around on your HD)

Hi Fintan, thanks so much for your reply.

I set to ext2 because it can be read in a Windows machine, e.g. with Explore2fs. I didn't realise that this also works with ext3. I don't really want a FAT partition on this machine.

I just added to my initial post before you posted, saying that I will take people's advice and avoid QTParted in future. However I can't burn a CD at present (trouble with my other machine (SUSE)). But I will see what I can do for partitioning with my oldish Knoppix, Morphix or Suse boot disks.
Also I will just stick to ext3.

I forgot, I have a brand new ZenWalk Live CD right here.
        It has Gparted on it.

        Partitions Fixed.
