    Gutsy or Feisty?

I do not know what version of Kubuntu I'm running? How do I tell?

The output of uname -a is
    Linux KAYA 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Sun Sep 23 19:50:39 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux
please help, I want to know whether or not I need to upgrade... And If I'm not running gutsy, How do I upgrade without destroying my current files? Will apt-get distro update do everything?

Open a konsole shell and type:
    Code:
    lsb_release -a

Can't help you on that. I'm still using Feisty (and happy with it), although I have downloaded the Gutsy .iso and burned the CD. I'm waiting.

If I were you, I'd do a lot of reviewing of the Gutsy forum. There have been a lot of unhappy users who borked their working systems by upgrading. That is not to say that there have not been successes. But there have been more mishaps than success.

Back up data, format, install. Each new release people try the nifty upgrade tool and it works for most.. but for those who it doesn't work for suffer....

It's a good chance to go through what you have and decide what you need to keep anyway. Backing up in Linux is easy.. take your .thunderbird folder, your firefox folder and the contents of your home folder save them on another disk and you've got all the important stuff backed up.. once you install and run thunderbird and firefox just copy the folders back and you're up and running as though you never formated. I suppose there will be other data for some people but the process is very easy compared to Windows.

Yeah the upgrade tool is not working. I'm a total noob though, will apt-get distro update (or is it upgrade?) do everything?
