26.3G for / is overly generous. 10G would be more than sufficient.

I agree. I used 6GB for "/" when I installed Gutsy RC a month ago, and I just checked it last night and it is only 56% full.

If you drop to 6G for / then you will have a total of 37.8G for /home. You will want a larger /home anyway - it's going to fill up.

I was wondering when y'all were going to show up (thanks ), I was beginning to run out of ideas. The concept of backing up and doing a fresh install was going to be my next suggestion, should my previous have been unsuccessful. I was really hoping, however, somebody could jump in and give instructions on how to repair everything (just curious as to how that could be done), but that's OK.

            As far as
Well I'll probably do a fresh install, leave all the data on /home/ (if I can remember you have option in the installer not to format certain partiton, am I correct?), move /download/ to laptop, before that of course I'll use the tools Smiley
            My partition table:
            / 26.3 GB
            /home/ 17.5 GB
            swap 1G
windows 28G(yeah yeah, I know, but they don't work since I changed motherboard Smiley )
Do you think this is ok?
goes, I think it will be OK (please correct me if I'm wrong). You may receive some compatibility errors, though, if an app you try to install finds a version of the .hidden file it was going to create in your /home directory (from your previous installation). You may want to delete all the hidden files except those you need as a backup copy (such as .kde).

You may want to delete all the hidden files except those you need as a backup copy (such as .kde).
Intergre has a point.. Now it becomes only slightly complicated. If you haven't upgraded feisty to kde 3.5.8 you will have a serious problem logging in. Feisty uses kde 3.5.7 and gutsy uses 3.5.8. There is a compatability difference. So backup all mail, calender, address, etc files in ./kde/share/apps and the defaults in .mozilla/firefox as well as .mozilla-thunderbird/ (if you are using FF and / or TB). Now you can happily delete .kde and let gutsy create it on your first boot. As you will probably be backing up from a live cd you will now want to give your back ups username permissions and paste them back into their folders, then install FF and TB (again only if you use them) and up and running . For the other .hidden files, leave them. They are config files and if a reinstalled app does not like them it will tell you. Delete it in that case and let the app reinstate a new one by itself.

As for your partition table. As snowhog and dible already pointed out 26 gig is way to much for root. 6-10 is ample. This is not windows where everything gets dumped and left in "C". Unless of course you are planning on installing all 26000 + packages in the repository. Then of course you will be needing more space. Btw how big is your HD? Do you need to recover data from the windows partition? What do you plan on doing with your windows? If you want to reinstall it I would do that first. If not then you can still use windows as vmware "guest" machine and resize that partition to something like 10 gig. Either way you can safely use gparted live cd to resize and format your / and give that space to /home or a new /data partition. On the gparted link there is plenty of documentation pertaining to that.

I hope this doesn't confuse too much

Re: Kubuntu upgrade from 7.04 to 7.10 gone terribly bad...

Thanks for all the replies. I am currently installing a fresh system, and will copy ~/.kde/share/apps/ and ~/.mozilla/ as a backup on a laptop.

About the partitions: I'll not change anything , although it would be the best thing, but I'll continue to use space on / for downloads, and hope for that nothing like this happens again(I plan only upgrading the desktop machine to 8.04 LTS, and then to next LTS release.) Of course I'll buy a new HDD sometime in early future and make it data storage, because 80G is small(especially for A LOT of snowboard DVDs :P ).
And yes, the windows system.... well I don't know what to do with it at this point, maybe I'll try to fix it or just delete partition and use it as storage.
Thanks a lot for now, will report if any more problems and/or if everything is a success(in which i don't doubt ).

If you mean that literally, you are going to (eventually) run into problems. / (root) is not where you want to save downloads that you personally get (you browse to a site to download images, music, etc), as opposed to what the system downloads (Adept Manager and/or Synaptic packages). For that, you should use a location within your /home partition.

Yes, I understand clearly that this isn't the best way, but I'll find some kind of a solution ASAP(the best way would be a new HDD, as I mentioned before...), thanks for the warning.
