A comment on a upgrade experience. (problems finally resolved)

I write this as a comment on my experiences with gutsy, and as a bit of advice to the Kubuntu community. I have been enjoying Ubuntu and Kubuntu since I converted from Suse.

Unlike the upgrade from Dapper to feisty, the upgrade to gutsy has turned in to a colossal mess. Using the recommended Adept upgrade procedure, after approximately 5 (I lost track during the 2 1/2 days it consumed.) runs through the upgrade procedure, and several sessions with apt-get, some things appear to run.

Starting from a fully successful multimedia and networked configuration of Feisty....

The first think that happened is that I was dumped back to the command line.

The Samba configuration and connection to the Internet worked fine.

By reverting to vesa drivers, and after installing the Nvidia proprietary drivers and re-installing the Nvidia utilities I was able start X and configure the system to get back to Twinview. By completely reconfiguring the system using the Nvidia utilities.

By downloading and recompiling the VirtualBox kernal drivers, I was once again able to run my virtual windows session to enable critical windows applications.

After re-installing alsa and the alsa utilities, I succeeded in getting the sound to work, although at this point I don't remember how.. After getting the sound to work, mp3 playback worked.

Using the feisty guide, and a lot of Googling, I succeeded in getting Lirc working again. (Although still not a well as prior to the upgrade. The remote still will not start Mythtv.)

MythTv is still not cooperating on live TV, will play previous recording though. This problem seems to be with my pvr150 not being detected. Therefore Ivtv does not load.

After reinstalling and using Automatix to install the dvd playing stuff, the system hangs when attempting to play a dvd in Kaffeine. I have not successfully corrected this, though it worked flawlessly under Feisty.

I can say that every single custom setting that I managed to get working in Edgy was broken or erased after the so called upgrade to Gutsy. So far I have seen NO advantage to the user in this upgrade. I still have a broken system and a long way to go.

After three plus days of fighting with this, I am fed up. This is worse that the so called upgrades to OS/2 that involved going through 53 floppies, twice.

Canonical should review their policies, and develop some respect for the effort put in by their user base to configure their product. Perhaps a 6 month release schedule is not realistic. Starting over from the beginning is not a viable option for everyone every time. As a former IT specialist, I could not in good conscience recommend this to anyone.

As a person who has been trying to convert to Linux since 1995. This version of Kubuntu is NOT ready for release. It is almost, but not quite enough to make me go back to M$ Vista. At least Vista home premium and basic mostly work (at a price).

If this is the best work that can be accomplished by the Linux community, you are a LONG way from competitive with M$. I understand that there will be problems, but a complete breakdown in what is supposed to be an upgrade is unacceptable.

I for one would appreciate documentation that is not written to be opaque, obfuscate, confuse, and completely prevent understanding by normal human beings. Flames, RTFM, and obfuscation is not going to get a place in the market, although perhaps in the Bizarre.

    AMD Athlon 64X2 5200+
    2 gb memory
    Nvidia Geforce 7100 GS
    Hauppauge PVR-150

After several days Googling and re-booting, I believe I have tamed the beast. I tried Compiz-Fusion, and I now understand why it is not loaded by default. I guess I really don't need eye candy that bad. What I found out mostly is that the upgrade is very buggy, the documentation is sketchy at best, but once running it is nice.

Maybe next time will be the trick...

btw: Adept is still convinced that there is a new distro upgrade available... asig...

Do I read this (reinstalling Automatix) correctly as in you used Automatix in Feisty?
In that case you might have found the reason for your bad update experience...
I too think that that is where the proverbial dog buried the bone. autoimatix and its stuff are not supported by *buntu.

I know this is documented but as you mentioned in a different reference very poorly.

In the future just uninstall automatix and all the apps. it installed completely before upgrading or stay away from it completely.

    I use aptoncd:
    http://aptoncd.sourceforge.net/
to backup my apps and stuff before upgrading. It works fine

I agree with you that the upgrade procedure leaves a lot to be desired and that it is a long way to tipparrary

In essence I believe you are right in a few regards (although I dont quite agree with the comparisons) and only hope that the gods that are take notice

Yes the upgrade should also upgrade your video card driver and its settings, for that I would write a letter to Nvidea.

Alsa should work out of the box but doesn't as has been mentioned on many threads.
    Another chip/driver issue??

I don't know about TV and remote control as I never used that. Maybe a letter to the respective chip/driver producers??

    ETC., etc.

That said I don't know of any OS that doesn't only upgrade just itself but also tires to upgrade the whole installation, apps, settings and all, much less gets it done flawlessly.

If you know of one please let us know.

To take your comparison in stride:
If I had to upgrade winxp to vista (god forbid) and install all the drivers, and apps I had on my xp (god forbid even more) I would be at it until thanksgiving and have spent thousands of dollars in the process on apps that are not compatable with vista anymore. Various adobe/macromedia products just as an example. I am not even counting the price of the OS upgrade from XP Pro to Vista something whichever is compatable, and the Hardware upgrades needed.
If I had the inclination of spending that kind of money all over again I would buy a SGI machine and be done with it or for a bit less a top of the range mac.

As it is I am quite happy, aggravations and all.

To the individual that said an upgrade to Win Vista would be very expensive, my comment would be that Vista is the first one from M$ that would require major updates. Vista may cost a bit, but most of the updates are free downloads. From Win95 to WinXp, most of the older software came along with very little problems. Personally, I think that Win2k was the best they ever did, but that is my opinion. Vista is still a slicker install path to a pvr tv system. (If you can ignore all of the drm stuff, which I have a problem with.) Upgrading my Windows software is not much of a problem as I use Open Office, Firefox, and the Gimp. The Hauppauge pvr stuff comes with the card, and I do not have to pay for channel listings. (TitanTV)

What I hope to do is to make a KDE system my default. The only Windows app I still use is Quicken 2002, which I am obviously looking to replace. (Later Quicken stuff is unacceptable.) I plan on building an entertainment system for my living room, but I think I will wait for the next LTS version.

I wasn't necessarily referring to the cost of a vista upgrade but the costs and time incurred by upgrading all of the software involved again adobe/macromedia as an example plus the cost of upgrading my hardware.

Be that as it may if you have any problems setting up you KDE box there are a lot of people here willing and capable of help.

As for a media center maybe this will be of help:
        http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...55048298449564
        and
        http://linuxmce.org/

I noticed you are using mythtv so this may not be interesting but I found linux mce much easier to install, especially as it comes packaged in ubuntu version as well.
Or as an addon cd to kubuntu:

If you are looking for a replacement for quicken this may be of interest:

it is open source (ASFAIK) but not free ($30)
