done.
moved on to gutsy.
some problems (but i guess it could have been a lot worse)...
during the upgrade:
only one, but pretty serious, issue during the upgrade.
followed the suggested/official upgrade procedure via adept and upgrade tool.
got to after downloading all the new packages.
upon installation of "debconf", everything crashed.
had to work with "dpkg" and "apt-get" to get me out of troubles.
after the upgrade:
1) xorg.conf untouched but external monitor not enabled anymore (nvidia-glx-new)
had to use nvidia-settings to reconfigure the server.
2) eclipse does not allow to edit java sources anymore (editor missing)
had to uninstall eclipse and reinstall it, carefully selecting the necessary packages.
3) "dolphin" was set as default file manager in feisty: now konqueror got set
had to go in "file associations" and change them all over again.
this is the only way i know.
4) gtk apps not looking right anymore: "gtk styles and fonts" plugin missing
had to re-install the "gtk-qt-engine" package.
will update this in case i find anything else.
