    hda2 Extended

I've done a clean install of Kubuntu. In the install procedure you're asked about partitions. I have chosen "Use entire disk" there.

Now everything worked fine. No problems.

But now I was browsing my Hd and I've noticed that i had 3 partitions

    Code:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/hda1 * 1 9587 77007546 83 Linux
    /dev/hda2 9588 9964 3028252+ 5 Extended
    /dev/hda5 9588 9964 3028221 82 Linux swap / Solaris
Could somebody tell me what the use is of /dev/hda2.
Why does kubuntu make this partition?

Well to pu it simply. Your intallation created one primary partition (hda1) one extended partition (hda2) which basically the rest of the disk and a swap partition (hda3) within the extended partition.

I hope this clarifies things a bit

No, it has nothing to do with linux. It is the way hd's are partitioned. You need one primary, 4 is the maximum. An extended partition is a "holder" for logical partitions of which you can have as many as you wish. And linux can reside on either
