After upgrade unable to start window manager

Did the upgrade from Feisty to the new Kubuntu.

On first boot, got the new snazzy login box and logged in. However after some time, the login box reappeared.

    Done this a few times.

I can get the command prompt if I do the default boot.

    Any ideas?

I've seen it -- I think it is a broken X server. First thing to try is to boot the "recovery mode", and run the
    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
script. First time you run it, let it autodetect your video card, and then finish the script accordingly. When you are finished and it dumps you back to the command line, enter
    Code:
    startx
    .

If it doesn't run a GUI for you, try it again but the second time tell it "NO" to autodetecting, and choose "VESA" as the display type. Once you've got a GUI, you can install a better driver, if you need to.

Thank you very much. That's got me up and running.

I have another problem now, relating to the shell version I choose. If I choose the 22 version, I get all kinds of complaints about my hard drive. If I choose shell version 20, it all works.

Any ideas or a new thread?
