Kubuntu 7.10 desktop i386 no install last night

Guess some vital part of the server system was down.
Last night I could not get Gutsy final 7.10 32 bit to install, as the installer hung on "configuring apt, scanning mirrors at 82% installed.
After 2 tries and a second download in case of a corrupt image, I left it hanging and slept.
By morning, it had installed, but had commented out all of sources list, as the sources were not available.
Also made a post on the forum last night, but this was lost as the forums then timed out and were unavailable, part of the same phenomenon probably.

So an install of Kubuntu is almost totally wedded to the availability of its sources, or install hangs and becomes glacially slow configuring apt.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

OK, you're in Australia. Is there more than 1 mirror available -- can you try another one? The Internet is a funny "place" -- If this problem still exists today, you might try telling the installer (via the initial questions on time zone) that you're in Hawaii or something like that. :P

this is an live cd install bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ty/+bug/154095 please allso add your report to it as well, allso the install does not fail it just removes repositories only so Do not reinstall if you have all ready installed Kubuntu

if you have all reaady installed k/ubuntu then skip this next part
Install 7.10 with the internet disconnected (before you even boot the live CD up) you will get an error msg that should not happen (bug) but will not prevent it from installing kubuntu

all it does is remove repositories (basicly all the updates and disables add/remove programs)

to fix do this

goto System > Admin > software sources

1. Tick all boxs apart form source code (do not think norm users need that)
2. Pick your Download From server location (as it picks main server by default click on search if you cant see one for you)
3. Goto updates and tick the first 2 options
4. [Recommended but Optional] change the auto up date check to [Download all updates in background] (asmuing you do not have an hard disk that is very small its an better option so your ready to install when you are ready just means you do not need to have to wait for them to download)
do not recommend auto install with out confirmation as it may not wait for all updates to be install when shuting down the pc, as it make brake your box

Thanx guys,
guess it is an install bug, and after editing sources.list, the install was fine.
Now Kubuntu 7.10 seems to pin one to the closest mirror, regardless what is in sources.list, and regardless if it is slo-o-o-w-w-w---- which is a real nuisance, as the Australian (K)ubuntu mirrors are quite slow.
Guess I could change my location in KDE, but would the pin believe me, and this is definitely not convenient.
It is definitely not at all intuitive on install from the live cd!

This is the first time I have struck this particular lack of free choice in Kubuntu, though I guess it is designed to spread the load on the mirrors?

However during the day here most of the northern hemisphere is asleep, and unloaded, and vice versa.
So tell me, where is the logic of this pinning?
Can it be disabled?
I sure hope so, as it can be a real nuisance, and lead to the install problems described.
Surely it could be set up to seek only the fastest mirrors wherever to spread the load.
This would surely work better, and would be more logical.
I will report the bug and try to voice these sentiments.
